Looking at the current range, in the 1070 and 1080 from Nvidia then the 480 from AMD, they dont really justify the cost in terms of performance increases over my 290 for my liking.
What is next? What can I wait for that will be worth the few hundred quid over the 290. I know exact figures cant be said, but looking at gen to gen, what will be next? I know Vega are early 2017 but I figure they will be looking at 1080 territory, or maybe to blow Nvidia out the water? I dunno, but just how long is left to wait before its upgrade time.. My upgrade tingle is coming back, and my wc loop is satisfying it for now, but surely cant be long until I NEED to upgrade something haha!

I think best case scenario for next year from AMD would be a 1080-like for £400ish. I wouldn't bet on it though. I think Pascal/Pascal+10% for similar pricing is most likely. Which is great with freesync, because it still saves you a lot, but not great in absolute performance terms.

If it's the moniter in your sig, so 2560 x 1080 @ 60hz a single 1070 would pretty much smash through everything at that resolution in a majority of titles, may need to notch down a few of those excessively demanding settings in some games.

Having said that could just wait, no idea where vega will land and I imagine a R9 290 is still doing a decent job at that resolution anyways.

I am on the fence now, I have 290's in CF and the 4gb is now showing its limitation at 1440p but I have a freesync monitor. Getting fed up of waiting for AMD while Nvidia continue releasing cards every few weeks.

290 and Freesync here also, waiting on Vega, if Xfire was more reliable I would have had bought a pair of 480s but it's not worth the hassle right now.

Hoping Vega drops in around the middle of 1080 and TitanXP ie around where the 1080ti would fit but be cheaper, I'm guessing around £550-£650 if it lands in that region of performance.

I'd say this close to Vega just wait it out.

Yeah I was looking at CF but frankly I can't justify the cost of getting a 2nd block for the 290 as it waa gonna cost 90 quid from aqua computer which for what is selling as a 100 quid GPU it's not really worth it imo.

I want AMD because I would love one of those beasty 38 inch displays when they become cheaper and more popular

The 290 is doing the job for me at the minute it's just with the 5820k being as good as it is, I feel I'm not taking advantage of the x99 platform tbh

Albeit 550 is a bit pricey for what I'd hope for from AMD, I can highly imagine if it's offering 1080Ti performance and freesync I don't think I could say no..
I think my best option is to wait a few months and see what drops and whether AMD make the wait worth it and if not I'll wait and see what Nvidia are offering with presumably the 1170/80 and hope the pound has found some grips again on the market
