Food: are you stocking up ahead of the imminent price rises?

Yes it was a small run business, but come on 50p and the guy spent half a grand, perspective and common sense and keep customer happy.

50p is nothing when you spending 1000X more than that!

Not sure what the argument here is. Your friend obviously had £23 so why should the guy at the counter go, oh don't worry, no need to break the £20, just give me the 3 coins instead.

It would potentially be different if your friend only had £3, and it was a case of pay £3 or leave the stuff.

Because he had already spent £500 and the business would have made a good profit from that exchange.

Be nice and knock 50p off an item the customer forgot to purchase, knowing you would empty your till of £19.50 in change for the sake of 50p?

That is penny pinching and it gets on my nads big time.

Hell OCUK give Haribo away for free for just ***** and giggles. :D

Business is not all about money, although important it is always nice to connect to your customers on a human level. ;)

Whoever serves them does not care. They need the till to be correct at the end of the day, a minimum wage worker is not going to make up the difference.

This was not a main stream outlet it was a one man band, so it was the owners discretion.

I have had a few quid knocked off in comet and currys when spending a few quid on multiple items in the past.

This guy was full retard over 50p.

Sounds like "this guy you know" is a) a bit of an idiot for not paying by card in the first place, and b) generally a bit of a ****. Why is someone working a till for minimum wage going to care if you decide to cancel your sale - they don't get commission! However the 50p your mate was penny pinching would have been coming out of their pocket

1) Oil prices have settled at $52 a barrel even with OPEC doing their worst. Add a proportional 25% for £ depreciation then we are at $65 a barrel proportionally...$25-30 LOWER than the boom years of economic expension pre 2008.

even the ripoff prices that we are forced to pay (that often bare no resemblance to base oil prices) are way lower and haven't been this low since 2009

2) Food prices are in DEFLATION as shown in the latest inflation statistics.

The two most crucial things we spend money on are bargains and will continue to be bargains by historical standards.

It was the guy serving the customer that owned the shop!

Some people get far to hung up on money period.

I don't have much, but I also do not penny pinch. ;)

50p out of a £20 pound note! Come on the guy just spent £500 cash and he has to bust a £20 for 50p.

You're failing to understand the point itchy, the price was £3.50, not £3.

He had the money in his pocket, why should the business take the loss of 50p to save him the massive inconvenience of having to carry 2 notes in his wallet and 5 coins????

50p could have been the entire profit margin on the £3.50 item he bought.

They still have to balance the till.

I have had a few quid knocked off in comet and currys when spending a few quid on multiple items in the past.

Me too. I've given discounts as well, when possible. It is not always possible.

This guy was full retard over 50p.

No, they did their job. If they have been told not to discount x item, then they can't.

Yes why should the bloke be let off 50p when he clearly had the money to cover it, it makes no odds if it's in the form of coinage or a large note. Staff cannot just go randomly letting folk off 50p here and 50p there wise they would have to do it for everyone. Then when their till is constantly down they will be the one who gets into trouble. Obviously if it was the owner then he had discretion.

It's like when I sold my old £200 scrapper and the buyer was haggling over a tenner, then he pulled a wadge out of his pocket there must have been at least 3K in 20 notes.

In business it pays to be honest and polite and don't try to exploit as you will lose in the end. ;)
