Following the excellent help and advice from the MX5 thread I've bought my new motor.



2 Litre sport tec
6 speed
LSD
Folding hard top
Heated leather seats
BOSE sound system

2009 model
32k miles with full Mazda history
Last serviced by Mazda in August
1 previous owner

Very nice.

Ive just bought a similar mk3 myself.

Wasnt sure about the folding hard top but I'm happy I didn't get another cloth top. The hard top was much warmer this morning.
Heated seats are better than expected.

Just noticed this morning that mine has heated mirrors, what luxury :)

Haha not sure if my mirrors are heated. The folding roof does make it just like a normal car, though I hear more Road noise but that might be due to being so close to the ground.

It's weird looking towards the car next to me and having their wing mirror at eye level, if they're driving an suv all I see is the top of their wheel arch!
 
Thanks folks really pleased with it.

Those turbo kits look insane!

The only things that need addressing cosmetically are a bit of rust on all 4 calipers, some light rust on the locking wheelnuts and the exhaust tips need a good clean.

Mechanically the car is top top except the handbrake isn't very good on steep hills and has to go up 5 clicks to stop.me rolling back, even when warmed up.
The last mot had an advisory saying the inner side of one disc was pitted and thin but not critical.
So the plan is to check out the rear brakes and hopefully it's something simple, I suspect a sticking slider.

As for the cosmetics a plastic pan scourer should get the carbon off the exhaust tips (don't fancy wire wool if it can be helped), silver Hammerite on the calipers (I've had a big tin for years that seems to last forever) and a bit of wire wool on the locking wheelnuts if the rust can't be scoured off.

Fingers crossed it'll be sorted at zero cost!
 
Underseal and cavity wax it. A proper job is about £350 at a specialist. And well worth it. The MK1's and MK2's loved to rot, and the MK3's have been around long enough for people to start reporting rust issues.

I daresay yours is fine on an 09 with 30K miles, but a good wire brush and ditrinol session will protect it for the future. :)

Thats a nice example, i wouldnt mind a wee mx5 but i'm tied by my lifestyle to needing a boot and by my bank to just one car.

Would love to do up a mk1 some day as a project, some day.

Thanks for the heads up, I've heard of it being done to these cars but didn't realise how much importance people on the mx5 forums place on getting this done.

The.proper job involves panels coming off, a thorough cleaning, all the drainholes are squirmed and the underside is waxoiled. Most of the cost is labour.

I won't be able to do as good a job as the pros so am looking to get this done.
 
My wife has had one of these from new, currently she has just completed 70,000 miles in it and it's going as strong as ever. Bar a single sensor issues, fixed under warranty, the car has been faultless and runs like clockwork. They are really cheap to run and she loves it. My advice is get a good set up on the car, which I did from 2 weeks into ownership as this transforms the steering feel (more weight and feel) and sorts it's manners out a little.

^^ looks good that, I remember when you got it!

any issues with rust?

keeping in my mind that my 2007 mazda 3 is very much orange underneath.
