Hi all, been ages since I posted on here, but seeing as I'm coming to the dyno day next Saturday I feel I should say hello!

In addition to the mx5, I recently bought this 335i. As clarkey said, it's a fine machine and the DCT is awesome :D It has the factory fit BMW Performance Exhaust and also the Burger Motorsports JB4 piggyback tuning thingy. I'm actually moving over to the MHD platform, the cables are in the post so may be running that by Saturday.

I have also just ordered a dual-cone intake, larger intercooler and some de-catted downpipes, to use in conjunction with the MHD map. I doubt they'll be on and ready in time for Saturday, mind.

Looking forward to seeing some old and new faces at the weekend :)

Thanks!

Today I removed the JB4 box and returned the car to stock. It then immediately remapped it with an off-the-shelf map using the MHD platform. I'm thoroughly impressed, it's making what feels like comparable power to the JB4 but with none of the drawbacks.

Exactly the same as my car including the colour, I am thinking of buying a new car soon but I'm having trouble deciding on a replacement because the 335i is a fantastic car.

Out of interest, what were the drawbacks?

It kept going into limp mode. I say drawbacks, that was the only real one, it has many features the MHD does not which are cool, the most useful of which was the ability to use the clocks as a menu system for controlling the many features. For example, I had it set to use the fuel guage as a boost guage when the throttle was applied at 50% or greater. When releasing the throttle, after five seconds, it resumed showing the ever diminishing fuel level. You could switch 'maps' on the fly through the clocks even whilst moving. Very clever stuff. Very quick demo here....

The boost control wasn't particularly smooth either, both targets and actual boost fluctuated a lot. The MHD seems to be much smoother. Both feel as though they tail off significantly towards the redline (boost wise) which I believe is a hardware issue, hopefully helped by the fatter and catless downpipes and mahoosive intercooler i'm about to install.

Ultimately though, going into limp mode almost every time you have a long pull (4th and above) was getting really irritating. I will say though, the stock boost is circa 8psi peak and the jb4 had it up to a bar at 2000rpm and peaking at 16psi - the car felt **** fast as a result.

Are the newer equivalents worth the upgrade? My BMW knowledge is more or less E36, so even this E92 has been a steep learning curve and therefore couldn't advise.

I am only thinking of changing mine because I have had it since new and it's 8 years old now (still only 21k on the clock) and I fancy a change, my mate picked up a new S3 last weekend with the fancy virtual cockpit option which I like but I think maybe something like a M240i would be more to my liking with it having a newer and more powerful version of the engine in the 335i. My budget is £40k which gives me a lot of other options including the 4 series, C class Merc and S3 saloon and even the new Porsche 718 Cayman if I don't tick any option boxes.

Cheers wedrum! Although I have played with it, albeit at the business end, not the styling end... I don't really have any plans styling wise, it's a classy handsome car and I like it very much!

Clarkey helped me fit a larger intercooler today, and earlier I fitted the Burger Motorsports dual-cone intake... lots of lovely but subtle turbo whoosh! I also have some fat downpipes to go on, but we looked at them when it was on the ramps today and immediately booked it in for someone else to do the job - **** that is putting it mildly.

40k + your car is a tasty budget, and if a Cayman is feasible for your lifestyle/intended use then I have no idea what you're asking on here for :p Having had several BMWs and then spent almost three years in a B8 audi, I can honestly say you couldn't pay me to have another audi, utterly rubbish to drive. Shame really, as very nicely designed and screwed together and the MMI creams iDrive... but when you're spending that kind of money the car should also drive well, and unfortunately Audi don't really offer that IMO.

£40k is including my cars trade in value mate, I'm not made of money you know :)

Edit: Just for the record I'm not asking for any advice on here regarding what car to buy next, I think that anyone looking to buy a new motor should check out as many reviews as they can and do some research and then make their own mind up.

great car I missed out on a 09 plate last week from my local bmw dealer not many pop up at the dealers and when they do they go in a day or so

LSD is definitely on the cards.

Get as late an 09 as possible! Mine is a bit of a hash together car, come LCI bits and some non-LCI bits. July 2009 build date. So a 2010 model in audi lingo :p

There is no need to do this, all E92's built between September 2008 and February 2010 are the same in terms of specification. It is September 08 that it's important you find a car newer than as this adds the CIC iDrive system (and marks the availability of DCT, prior to this 335's had the ZF6HP).

It's not a 2010 model at all, the MY10 E92's were March 10 onwards and were LCI models. They are different. The E92 LCI added new front and rear lights, new wheels and the move to the N55 engine from the N54 in the 335i. There are no LCI-bits on a 2009 car :p

I bow down to your BMW knowledge! You have nailed what I meant lol

The 2010 comment was a joke parodying Paridigm's (I think) 2017 Audi he just had delivered :D

So, after pulling 377bhp on the dyno Saturday.....

Today, with the help of Lee @ SSG in Stoke I added the last piece of the "Full bolt-on" package to the 335i. Evolve de-cat downpipes and then flashed the ECU with the most aggressive Stage 2 MHD map for use with 98RON.

It feels much more powerful, spooling is much quicker, noise is improved and performance according to the butt dyno is excellent. Well worth the morning's work.
