When did this become a 'thing'?

It seems every time I see someone being interviewed on TV, they answer a question with "So,.....".

Is this in the 2016 Media Training handbook?

Very annoying.

It annoys me beyond all reason. Why an educated person would start a sentence with 'so' just boggles the mind.

Initially I thought it was just young 'valley girl' types, but it's become ubiquitous.

This should have been a poll... :D

I'm going to go out on a limb and say as people in this day and age aren't reading as many books or having as many face to face intellectual conversations as they once where, generally, we are lazier with our vocab and use filler words like the one mentioned to facilitate our dummy dummy brains.

May be only a fraction of whats going on but I do believe it has some sort of impact.

I have also noticed a lot of people start an answer with yes and no in no particular order and then proceed to answer the question or try to.

I don't mind this providing that it's not used to start every sentence.

The people who use "like" 3-4 times in a sentence without expressing a preference or comparing similar things should all be fed into an industrial wood chipper.

"Yeah, no".... also "Ja, no".
Not just me, not just this country.

Seems like it's been going on for a lot longer than I thought.
Since the early 80s, from my experience. 'Like' seems to be more recent.

I'll do it if I'm going to start a long back brief for example if my boss has asked me to find out some info, kind of like a subtle warning order that this is going to be emotional... However I can't say I have noticed this is a big thing.

Actually starting a sentence with "So" is a derogatory way of dismissing your previous sentence.

I agree and I hate the word used in that context.

I have a confession the missus uses it all the time, if it was not for time in relationship and commitments she would be "SO yesterday!". :p
