Anyone into Germanic / Anglo-Saxon Heathenism?

I think you're likely to get a poor reception if you pretend to join a religion you don't believe in solely to use it as a social club.

Pagan atheism is well known thing and is certainly accepted within some parts (I'll admit not all parts) of the community. Check out some of the answers here:

Nothing better in my opinion than an evening of polite chitchat with ultra right wing nationalists.

Your right, atheism is boring. Sod reading Bertrand Russell and watching Peter and Christopher Youtube vids.

Buying a motorbike was a great way of meeting older gentlemen dressed in leather. But with this pastime you get to meet skin heads and large Germanic folk and wear black. Plus you can wear pewter Celtic like jewellery, look hard as nails but still be frighted of needles and cry at the dentists. What's not to like.

Hopefully I won't be hanging around with that type of person. There are perfectly nice Heathens who are not ultra right wing nationalists and who are not racist.

This is the thread I've been waiting for. Our cast for this film will be:

Tosno - showing a surprisingly expansive vocabulary over the last week, particularly in reference to Milford and so forth. A great supporting actor!

Vincent1989 - our antogonist. A man not afraid of using words, he uses them in a bewildering way to remind us that God is pretty great, thank you very much.

Evangelion - dropping some truth bombs. Can I get an amen?

Dowie - popping in for some reasonable debate and then RSS-ing us Daily Mail style.

KoolPC - word salad embassador.

Moses - scene stealer.

RaohNHS - IS IT SOMEHOW RELATED TO WIKILEAKS?

and introducing:

Cromulent - The Heathen. Where will he go? What will he do? What could it all mean?

* cinema-guy's voice*

"There's a man, a question, and no right answer.

The Heathen.

Showing in cinemas this summer".

Least I didn't get some shoddy bit part!

If that's what's going to float your boat then go for it, I think the loss of community values is the greatest casualty of the decline of religion in modern times, if joining a bunch of heathens is going to help you feel involved, loved and in good company why ever would you not.

This thread is probably going to get me flamed because some people think that this is a stupid thing to be interested in but I'm being serious :).

Over the last couple of years or so I've become increasingly interested in Germanic Heathenism. I find it fascinating and have read quite a bit about the history of the religion and the people who still follow it. I wouldn't call myself a religious person in the traditional sense of the word. I don't believe in any gods as such but I do believe that what some people call gods are something that people can use to focus their energies in a communal setting and that would give them good and pleasant feelings.

As an atheist I find life extremely boring at times. There is nothing that unites atheists together and I feel like I am missing out on the community feeling of religious people which is what is kind of drawing me into Heathenism. I want that shared belief that brings people together and I want to join a group of people who believe and are interested in the same sort of things as me.

So is anyone else interested in this subject at all? Or even better is anyone a member of any Heathen organisations?

P.S Please don't flame me :).

Am I missing something?

Unless being an atheist is so important to you, that you have to tell everyone. I don't see how you being an atheist prevents you from being involved in a community or society or sporting group. Sure it might stop you going to church but that's about it.

Your hatred of facial hair rules you out of Germanic heathenism....:)

The tenets behind Odinism aren't actually all that bad, part of the problem though is that it also attracts far right nutters.

Ah yes, I get that too, it is amusing. Recall asking one how did he managed to get his tattoo, said he passed out during and after it. Much hilarity supressed inwardly.

Oddly enough I do find some of the ultra churchy creationist types to be similar, and indeed some of the least tolerant people I have ever encountered.

So as an "atheist" you feel lonely and want to join an religion so you can become sociable.

You know, there are other ways going around that without having to play dress up and dancing in a wood while leaving good food out as offerings to whatever animal life that comes by later to eat it.

Just get hobbies with a strong, tightly-knit community and sense of camaraderie. Works for me.

Plenty of non religious groups like that. Everything from sports to societies. I'm not sure why people think religious groups are going to be any different to those other groups. That said I guess people in religious groups are likely to go out of their way more and make a newcomer feel welcome and included.
This guy was not the kind of person to make friends easily.
