Going to collect a car on Friday. Will I have any issues insuring and taxing a car on the same day.
The plan is to pre arrange the insurance to swap cars on the Friday, then when paying for the car tax it online at the dealers.

Sounds like a good plan to me, butttttttt.

I don't think I would use their PC to do any financial transactions with my bank card . That just maybe me being slightly paranoid.
If you are 100% sure of buying it, tax it online from home, print off the reciept\email the DVLA will send you to proof you have taxed it.

I remember one time the garage would not let the car go without proof of insurance, tax was easy to prof back then.
Not had owt like that happen in years though so they may not even care.

Not taxed a car online without the reminder though, bet you can still do it though.

Enjoy your new brum brum.

If it's taxed it must be insured but it doesn't need to be insured to be taxed, as in it won't refuse you tax if it shows an uninsured. Pretty sure that's right.

Also you can do it using the automated phone system or using a mobile browser if you don't want to go sticking your details into an unknown PC.

Yes I'm going to do it on my mobile.

It was purely that for some reason I have it in my head it needs to be insured and show as insured online to tax it online.
I know you can tax it with the green new keeper bit of the v5 so that's fine.

Dealer taxed my car in the post office while I was test driving it (amusingly presumptuous and not a clue why they'd choose that over online?!) then I dealt with insurance after actually buying it.

Why not sort it the day before you collect? Last two cars I've bought I've done this. To tax it just call up and ask the dealer for the number you need on the v5 and do it online.

It must be Insured to tax a car and you will be refused if it isn't. If you do it on-line and it doesn't show you can phone DVLA to tax it.

Done online, you should get confirmation of both tax and insurance emailed to you.
You could even keep the web pages open on your phone, but basically you are good to go the instant those are sorted.

We did exactly that last week!

Just to clear it up for anyone else. It no longer checks for insurance when taxing a car.

Seems they scrapped it for this very reason, too many failed online tax applications due to insurance database not being up to date.

"The proposal will also stop 600,000 online vehicle tax applications a year
failing when the insurance details are cross-referenced with the vehicle
record. These motorists will now be able to tax using their chosen channel
rather than be forced to tax at the Post Office®"

Thanks for all the input guys.

Just ask the dealer to tax it on your behalf and you pay them directly as part of the car purchase. Makes everything easier as they have their own portal I believe.

it only works if you tax it with the new owners reference number on the V5 - otherwise when you receive the V5 it will automatically refund the dealer with the cost of the tax (minus a bit).
