Your healthy and fitness lifestyle

37 in a few weeks and since January, I've dropped around 3st. Not all of that has been exercise, some has been stress, undoubtedly, but I have increased my exercise for the core 3 (swim, run, cycle). I don't improve times though, I just stay consistent, but that's because I don't train (as such) to get better. I've always been strong on a bike, always been short to middle distance in running and swimming has been ok but I know I can do better.

Having said that. Doing none of these things alone does not make me any more or less likely to get cancer. People have to understand that. There's incredible strength to scientifically suggest some forms of cancer and illness are hereditary. Sadly, I'm screwed there too as I'm adopted and have no way of knowing what my future holds on that front.

I led a fairly unhealthy life until my mid 40's, finally decided to sort myself out and get fit, eating healthily and walking miles every day and then bang, within months got hit with an auto immune disease that nearly killed me. Spent Christmas and new year 2013 in hospital, and have been physically pretty screwed ever since, despite my best efforts.
Nobody gets out alive.

I also suffer with general stress,My anxiety brings this on so some times i have good and bad days.

I really do feel you on the stress part,as mentioned above i do to,i think we all do,But work is certainly not worth getting yourself worked up about,And definitely shouldn't keep you up at night,Thats of course unless its your own business then its more understandable.

You have to ask yourself, how long have you been trying to climb that ladder, have they shown any interest in helping you climb that ladder,If not i think its time to move on. ;)

Yep. Intellectually I'm so very well aware of all these things, but it's tiring being super aware of every moment and reaction and therefore I sometimes just go with it. That's when it hits me. By nature I'm a worrier. I stress myself with the tiniest of things, knowing full well I can't effect any discernible change, and that it's not even my problem in the first place, but I still try and take it upon myself for some reason.

That's why I'm saving like a demon to get a mortgage cleared and some back up savings which will be able to see my go part time from my early 40s.

And my man, night work is really no good. I done it on and off for years. It made me old and took me a good year to bounce back from that.

Why does living a healthy lifestyle help you stop getting cancer? (srs)

It reduces your exposure to carcinogens and increases your body's ability to kill off cancerous cells before they become actual cancer. Although I suppose strictly speaking any cancerous cell is cancer, it's a very different thing if your immune system kills it long before it has any effect on anything.

Isnt it generally luck? (unless you're grossly obese / smoke/ drink too much?)

Chance plays a role, but you can affect the odds.

You've got to die of something, what people forget is so many conditions are only prevalent or indeed exist at all because people are now living long enough to get them.

I wouldnt worry too much about it, life's too short no matter how long it lasts, and whilst the benefits of staying healthy are most definately a good thing remember you will die, and it will be of something.

True, but what is often overlooked is quality of life. Living to 75 with little pain, a clear mind and considerable vigour and then suddenly dropping dead is very different to living to 75 with ever-increasing pain and confusion and ever-diminishing vigour from ~60 onwards.

Thats what i was meant to allude to in the second half, but you are right.

The only time all this exercise and fitness malarkey comes into play is if it's consistent. I have been on and off since January this year and have maintained weight but put on quite a bit of muscle.
Now I haven't been doing it the last month or so I feel like crap and know I've put on weight.
Consistency is key
My routine was cardio resistance 6 times a week with 2 football sessions and weight training 5 times a week. Never felt better but it's very difficult to maintain.

I've already had, and survived, cancer in 2011. It killed my father at 60 and killed his father at 56. I am 47 now so the chances are that I don't have a whole lot if time left.

But after my own scare in 2011 I put on a lot of weight due to inactivity, a poor lifestyle and hormone issues related to my illness. So I decided to change things radically. I started walking, i.proving my diet and then resistance training. I'm now in as good physical shape as in my 20's and intend to stay that way.

Hades has hit the nail on the head.

Genetics.

What the OP is doing is changing the phenotype, the physical, environment and good for you.

What Hades has experienced and survived is a genetic disposition to disease. Bravo Hades for winning the fight.

Healthy lifestyle, yes. And look after your teeth.

But look at what your 'ancestors died from'. If you are curious you can have health screening, scans. A good idea around 40 50.

And look after each other and live life. I had a patient who had 6 months to live (I am a dentist). I asked him if I could ask a personal question, he said go ahead. I asked what did the surgeon say to you when he told you the news. The surgeon said all you are left with is memories, go and do all the things you want with your friends and family and leave them with great memories. He was taking his family to Disney world. Left a lasting impression on me and changed my approach to life just that little bit for the better.

Arsonist, regulus & Nevakonaza -

How do you manage your stress? Do you actively do anything to help this? I do not have trouble sleeping or anything as serious as that but I often find myself stressed and annoyed (bad temper) when I find things are not going to plan. Im a planner. When you plan a lot its inevitable sometimes things won't go well. Which leads me to stress. Iv had high blood pressure on a rare occasion from getting myself worked up and stressed out but only 1-2 times a year.

My father suffers from stress and I think in the same way he does about most things. So I think I am prone to it also. His leads to him having high blood pressure all the time and meds to keep it under control.

I keep my body fat in the athletic to low average range, resistance train, be active generally, practice yoga, don't smoke, hardly ever drink, eat a wide variety of things, get supplemental vitamin D etc but I could still get struck down by something because a lot of it's pot luck, hereditary things and so on - you can only do your best to lower your chances but nothing's going to make you invulnerable.

Mental state can make a difference too - your body and mind are intimately linked via your central nervous system so mental health can affect physical health and vice versa - things like high stress and anxiety - so I try and pay attention to my mind just as much as my body.

Would love to know more about what you eat and do mate. How do you keep your body fat so low? Any tips on this other than eat clean and train? I drink 3-4 coffees a day, some spicy food, plenty of fibre and am currently practicing a KETO diet which is supposedly very good specifically for loosing body fat, especially abdominal fat.

Practice Yoga - Please do tell me more. Local classes or at the gym or at home? how did you start to learn this, did you have lessons? Is the Yoga for stress or for exercise?

I'm in my early 20s and am fortunate enough to live in a time which has the internet so for me my general awareness of health and lifestyle is pretty good.

I run a minimum of 12 miles a week, weight resistance training 3 - 4 days a week. I try and stay away from any saturated foods, try and get most of what my body needs from natural sources to avoid having to break down foods which aren't particularly good for me, I also suppliment for Vitamin D, B & Collagen.

I'm hoping this will act as an insurance policy for my later years but you never bleeding know, either way it makes me happy and keeps me busy.

I understand Vit D as most of us are deficient in the UK. Why did you pick B and Collagen just out of interest. There is so many different supplements, I'm always interested to know why some people pick some and others others.

I take Vit D, Green tea extract (studies show good for fat loss), and potassium and magnesium (my research shows being on a KETO diet results in deficiencies in these 2). I take the magnesium with Zinc before bed as apparently it aids better quality sleep....

No smoking, drinking, and very little red meat. Not much else I can do really.

I do yoga and pilates twice a week as well which helps with mobility and core strength, on top of a decent exercise regime.

Come and join us in the Sports Arena sub forum, you'll find everything you need and even the odd scientific study or 2 to back it up.

Smoking gone, drinking gone, the weight should but I don't try hard enough. I tell myself that my walking is enough exercise but I should be doing more. I happy with the way I am so that is how it will stay.

They used to say red meat is bad for you. But now they say unprocessed lean red meat is good for you!

Not sure what we're supposed to be doing regarding red meat. Surly man has been eating red meat and pork in sizeable quantities for thousands of years!?

44yrs old, and and cycle around 300 miles per month. + i try and go to the gym during my lunch hr. I drink maybe a couple of pints a week max. My problem is diet. While its not horrible, i do have a sweet tooth, and will scoff down an entire cake, or pig out on chocolate whenever its in front of me. My weight stays the same, i've never really been seriously ill ever. Most fella's fall sick with something mid 60's. I hope i'm not one of them. My old man got pancreatic cancer mid 60's. But that was a good 8 yrs ago, and apparently only 1 in 20 survive past 5 yrs. So seems to have dodged a bullet. My mum is in her 70's and survived breast cancer in her 50's. My grandparents all made it into their 80s and even 90's. Actually my grandma is 95 and still going strong. But the age is starting to catch up with her in the last few

Hopefully i just keel over and die in my mid to late 80's and call it good. Hopefully before my wife and especially before my kids.

My brother died at 19 of a brain hemorrhage. So when your time is up, your time is up.

I also love riding motorcycles, which can be detrimental to your health, but then again, i've not had anything, and been riding since i was 16. So will just keep on going. Love it too much to pack it in.

Yeah but humanity eating meat has caused AIDS and vCJD. Two of the worst diseases to afflict the planet. :p
