Motherboard is an Asus Z87 Deluxe all Hard drive (Samsung 840 Pro's x 2 for OS and WD Black & Greens) work fine on the 6 Intel ports but when i connect drives to the ASMedia ports things start to play up and by this i mean system takes ages to boot, so i have disabled these in the bios and bought a Adaptec 7085H Host Bus Adapter however i need to connect another 4 WD Blacks to this card and was wondering what is the best configuration for doing this, I do have the relevant SATA cables for both ports meaning i can connect up to 8 drives but for at least the next 6 month i will not be adding any more drives.

So what is the best way to set this up, should i bung all 4 drives on the first channel or split them 2 & 2, if 2 & 2 should i alter the port number so 1st channel 1 & 3 ports and Channel 2 ports 2 & 4.

Just for your info i have nothing in any slots as video comes off CPU (i7 4770k) but i will be putting card into the 2nd PCIe 3.0 slot which is the middle of the full length slots, here is a quick image of the mainboard.

If you need any other info from me just ask.

You'd need to use the first gold slot to get full bandwidth for the adapter.
That may be an issue for me as my CPU cooler is HUGE and i am worried about temps inside the case, i had it in the slot i mentioned and ran some tests and seems speed is very close to ASMedia ports, I will try to 1) put it in first slot and run some tests and 2) post an image of the inside so you can see how tight i am for speed, i have 2 Noctua NF-A14 IndustrialPPC 2000RPM 140mm High Performance Fan running over the HDD's in my Fractal Design XL R2 and suspect too little cool air will get to the card, anyway as i say i will post these later tonight or on Wednesday.

As above, no competitor links - Thanks, Armageus

Will not fit as you can see

So i presume i'm getting the best out of the card using a single drive like i have been so far just the config that is an issue for me.

I can't see from the pic how it's being obstructed.

Also bear in mind that putting a gpu in the middle slot will Limit it to using 8 pcie lanes. It won't make much difference, but it's not ideal.

It's more the card won't physically fit in the slot, or am i missing something?

Should physically fit in the big yellow slot?

Middle black slot "should" also be fine, but I have know some boards to be funny about PCI-E assignment e.g. if the first PCI-E 16x slot (i.e. the yellow one) isn't populated, then no lanes get allocated to the second one (E.g. because it has to change from 16x lanes to 2x 8xlanes).

The bottom black slot is unsuitable, as it only has 4x lanes, despite being physically a 16x slot. Some cards can cope with that e.g. Graphics cards, but Raid/Sata cards can be problematic.

OMG I can't beleive what andipstick i have been, you said top yellow slot i took it to mean pciex1 slot  you don't have to say it i know i'm a prat.

Anyway heard back from Adaptec and it makes no odds in what order i place drives and have just run a couple of tests, first image is a WD Black running of the Intel Chipset and 2nd image is running of the card, so as you can see very little loss if any, only drawback to this is it takes a fair bit longer to boot using the card but it's a fair price to pay, it's this way or new motherboard and i don't fancy that that's for sure

Thanks for your help guys, sorry about the screw up at my end.

Armageus Sorry about rule breaks, as teachers used to say
"Must do better"
