Do you ever get wound up by knowledge you think people should have?

The amount of people I encounter standing by a pelican crossing, that's not on a junction (i.e. won't change lights unless they press the button), waiting for the lights to change having not pressed the button.

It's not like they're even looking for a gap in the traffic... just staring patiently at the red man, waiting for it to be a green man.
* and and the the crossing lights/units are new, so the button surround lights up red once it's been pressed, as well as the "WAIT" light coming on.

many junctions incorporate a ped green phase when the staging allows allows. Button doesnt always need to be pressed and is many situations only there because people are so used to pressing it that they would be lost without it being there

Also the reason the crosings without pedestrian signals (mounted on repeaters and pushbuttons themselves) arent being installed in london anymore, because its so ingraned in us to look for the green man opposite people again were lost without it :)

As for something stupid people do that annoys me is constantly asking "how am i supposed to cross the road with the lights out" my favorite reply is one foot infront of the other and watch for traffic

The one that really grates me about lifts is...

For example someone is on the 6th floor of a building and they want to go to ground floor. Rather than pushing the down arrow button, they push the up arrow button.

When you ask them "why?"

They reply with "because I need the lift to come up to me"

IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT!

It's common sense I find people lack...

-Need to change a car tyre but you don't know how? How do you think I know how to do it? I was either shown, or looked it up.

-i don't know how to do x/y/z on a computer. How do I know how to do this? I've either looked for it or looked it up!

-i don't know what setting to use on the washing machine...try it!!!!

It's the same with everything...either try and figure it out or look it up / ask someone then magically you'll know!

Or a recent one from wifey. Someone called to make an appointment and she took the first date given because she djdnt have her calendar to hand....which is on her phone....why didn't you just put them on mute then check the calendar??? Arrrrgh

When I was on holiday the hair dryer had do not use on the shower labelled on the side.

I nearly asked for a full refund and the first flight back home.

We've bred at least 2 generations without teaching them basic general knowledge.

Additionally, by making almost everything remarkably safe, people can wander around oblivious with the situational awareness of a rock and not die by their hundreds every damn day.

The slippery slope that child-proof medicine and cleaning products bottles have brought us down into the Valley Of The Stupid.

Like what? I think I'm pretty savvy.

YouTube is the new instruction manual as no one reads them anyway.

This, I don't often ask how to do things, not because I'm a super-genius who knows all, but because I can Google stuff. Unfortunately this means the entirety of my office comes to me for technical advice, I'd tell them to use Google but I fear my role would then become redundant and I'd be phased out of the business.

This reminds me of people who press a traffic light button multiple times believing that somehow the traffic light is self aware, and it realizes that since you are pushing the button so much, you must really want to cross, so it will switch to the green man faster

Or they push it again after it's already lit up from being pushed, like the first time wasn't done properly and it really needs them to push it or it won't work.

I see this everyday. The pedestrian crossing is linked to the traffic lights, even if the button isn't pressed the crossing will turn green when the traffic lights are red.

That's a new one, I've never noticed anyone so that before :)

Agree with a lot of this. In terms of the older generation and technology. I genuinely think a lot of them are scared of it, and scared of change. They're used to doing the same thing day in/day out. Then when something changes they instantly say "why did they have to change it, it was perfectly fine the way it was" - this classic example of how some refuse to understand why things evolve and change to improve. This grinds my gears a lot.

When it comes to the younger generation. I don't specifically think they're thick. I think its just a lack of common sense and being uneducated. People aren't taught things like they were. Parents got lazy and just happy to shove their kids infront of the TV when they get home and their brain turns to mush. The depend on Facebook as their daily news outlet. etc.

The lack of common sense bugs me big time though. Even the lack of common sense to simply Google something instead of saying "I don't know" - they can quickly google to see who the latest **** is to have an abortion though and post about it to their friends!

I do find it annoying yet simultaneously funny when you see someone try something (like click a button) - this doesn't work. Then they simply continuously repeat the process with more and more frustration rather than trying something else, heavens forbid they may be doing something wrong!

I don't think I am particularly intelligent...if anything I am actually convinced that I am pretty dim compared to most people. But I am so so glad I posses common sense :p

I was at my work's induction, where they divided us into groups and held a quiz. One of the questions was about WW2, and I could hear muttering within my group "when did WW2 start/end?" I was like... really? Not the exact day/month, but surely knowing it was years 1939 and 1945 should be common knowledge even if we didn't cover it in school? Beyond dumb and an insult to the soldiers who fought and died for us.

Most people are dumb. Not only do they not know things, they don't know how to find out and educate themselves. Most don't care to find out, and make no effort to better themselves or their knowledge in any way.

It's sad but true.

The lobotomized ********* generation.

The silver haired scared of technology generation.

Most people are just thick in general, they don't have a clue about anything.

I cross a main road about 6 times a week taking my daughter to and from school.
The number of idiots who hit the button for the crossing all the time hoping the lights will change faster.

People who stand to wait for the traffic to stop when if they just looked to the left they would see the light is on red.

People who don't even bother and just stand there and move with the masses.

That's just crossing the road don't get me started on computer repairs and shopping!

The is not much I cannot do these days thanks to google that's for sure.;)

Bottom line is I think its laziness and ignorance or a combination of both, it can and often does make my blood boil.

Basic geographical knowledge of the country they live in really gets me the most though.
I don't know where most A and M roads go or where most places are, either on their own or in relation to each other... but that's what A-Zs and Google Maps are for.

2) She also once got confused when I started mentioning about DAB radio. Ended up with her saying "Why would I know what a DAB radio is?"
To be fair, I don't really know what it is or what DAB stands for either.
We actually have two of them, so I know it's 'digital radio' and that the signal is generally crap compared to the normal version, but that's about it...

She can live in our area for years and not know where a local park is, or what the name of a shopping precinct is called that people refer to all the time.
If I haven't been there several times myself, I'm the same. I also take several trips to learn a route, because I'm watching the road and the traffic, rather than the landmarks.

We've bred at least 2 generations without teaching them basic general knowledge.
But there's much more general knowledge now than there was two generations ago, as well... and the sort of things people *need* to know has changed over time.

It's common sense I find people lack...
None of those are common sense though, apart from the actual act of looking up how to do them.

she djdnt have her calendar to hand....which is on her phone....why didn't you just put them on mute then check the calendar???
None of my previous phones would let you do that.... You'd have to end the call first.

People who stand to wait for the traffic to stop when if they just looked to the left they would see the light is on red.
That one IS common sense, though, especially given the number of cars and cyclists who routinely run red lights!!!
Having right of way on the road is small consolation when you're wheeling yourself out of hospital having lost both legs...

Today my 22 year old female colleague asked -
You know the clocks went back, does that mean days are now longer or shorter?
We tried to explain it was 24 hours but we weren't getting through.

If someone is going to run a red light they will, am talking about seeing the cars approaching from 30-50 yards away and the light is already red.

I had one from years ago, this guy was a so called IT guy within the home office. He was having trouble installing windows XP on his home computer, so the bat phone goes and round I go. :p

Checking the computer no problems inserted cd and it kept getting an error at 20% or something like that.
I checked the CD for marks and sure enough a bit of food or something was smeared about 1/4 of the way in from the outer edge.
To be fair it was hard to see but if angled right in the light it was plain as day.

Wet the CD dried it and bingo it worked.

Not sure what it is with some people, they just don't see the world the same as I or many of you do.

I have always been a very curious person since I can remember.
Curiosity in life, things and the world around you plays a big part I think.

EDIT

Just remembered one.......

People who stand still on travelators at airports !

The thing is they probably think you're a complete 'moron' and lack 'common' sense because you don't know what happened in the latest TOWIE episode. Or what the Kardashians are up to. It's just different priorities.

I suppose watching peoples lives is a lot easier to understand than technology.

And as for the age factor, it's not uncommon. Have you heard the phrase "set in their ways". It sums it up perfectly.

I don't have a problem with people who don't know things unless they are spouting rubbish about things they don't understand. Its more of an internet thing because the internet is almost entirely anonymous but people seem entirely willing to give opinions on things they A) don't know about B) that a little thinking would solve

The worrying thing is that it takes 2 seconds to look something up. Its like reading a dictionary and speculating on what a word means. Look it up! You are already in a place that gives you access to quite literally the sum total of modern mans knowledge of everything.
