Apple to Introduce New Macs at October 27 Event

I think this is a pretty good article about the new macbook pros.

The only thing I really think is a bit ridiculous is the price. Beyond that I am happy with most of the new macbook pros.

Interesting read.

Out of interest regarding the amount of RAM, is there an alternative on the market that's a similar form factor that has more than 16GB of RAM?

There are a few I think but a lot of lines are really convoluted.

I had a little look at the dell XPS lineups and it was a nightmare picking out what model you wanted.

You had a configurator that didn't allow you to configure ram yet the model you were configuring would be a separate entity with the amount of ram you wanted.

The problem that a lot of people don't seem to understand is the processors and ram are related and the power draws of different ram make a big difference.

People complain about the lack of 32gb and point to laptop x that has it.

They complain about the gfx and point to laptop y that has it.

They complain about the lack of kaby lake and point to laptop z that has it.

What they ignore is that laptops x,y and z are never the same laptop. I've even seem people comparing the new macbook pros with alienware monsters that are 5kg and 2 inches thick with 4 hours battery life and a horrible trackpad.

He said that before returning to Apple when it was run by John Sculley and pretty much the same was happening then as it is now.

I don't agree.. he's talking about a time when Apple were releasing endless derivative options to try and boost sales.. that patently is not the case with Apple now.

They've released a product manufacturers product.. like a jony ive product.. sales, marketing and PR be damned.. they've got a vision which I suspect you disagree with and they've gone after that.

I'm not saying it won't be their downfall (it won't be their downfall) but it's not the same thing.

Whether it's the product side driving it without listening or the sales/marketing (on this occasion it's likely the former), they are still losing sight of what's important. A small minority has said it for years, but over time that voice is getting louder

I'm the biggest fan boy ever, so I certainly have no agenda against Apple, I've owned nearly every Apple product they've released in the last 10 years minus the Mac Pro. I've even bought one of these new MacBook Pros, but even I can see that compared to this time 10 years ago, it's just not the same.

Every time I come back to this thread I get annoyed about how they've removed the mag safe power adapter.

Forget innovating a gimmicky touch bar that predicts what your typing like an old T9 keyboard did because you were typing with numbers.

Innovate some way to integrate magsafe into one of the usb3 ports without having to get an ugly protruding £50 adapter from a 3rd party.

If the billions you have in the bank isn't enough to innovate that, then include a bloody dedicated magsafe charging port like you always have, you plonkers. It's iconic to Apple and it's ****ing incredible and useful! Was there someone in a meeting who really argued that it would be better to have it use standard USB C so they could market that fact you can plug it in on either side of the laptop? Instead of having a fantastic breakaway cable failsafe feature that I guarantee you has made countless Apple customers so thankful that it was ever created. Please don't tell me someone actually argued it would be a good idea to remove it because it will result in more broken laptops due to tripping over cables and therefore make them more money. I know that thought went through someones head.

I really don't know why I'm so irrationally worked up over some of the changes to the new line up. I wasn't really due for an upgrade, but I was hoping it would be exciting enough for me to want an upgrade, not berate them for some obvious issues that I imagine could have been avoided if they weren't so obsessed with clean lines trying to make it lighter than an air.

Had a play with the Surface Book, Acer Predator and 15" MSI today.

Pretty set on the Surface Book now, although I'd still like to try a Razer.

The keyboard, trackpad, screen and touch interface are all really good on the surface book... let alone it's light and the battery lasts for ages.

The Acer has a decent keyboard and a nice screen...

The MSI was my favourite keyboard though, really nice to use.

It's really tempting to get a laptop with a GTX1060 in it given how well they're performing... but the battery life of the surface book along with its gorgeous screen and a decent tablet I can do stuff with... i think it's the winner.

I think the problem is that the MBP 2016 loose to MBP 2015. It might be faster on paper but it is worse 'pro' laptop.

Imagine if.. the new MBP was the same form factor as 2015 MBP, but with Cannon Lake chips. All models would ship with the touchbar, and all of them have the following ports - left hand side: mag power connector, two thunderbolt 3 USB-C, legacy USB 3.0 right hand side: single thuderbolt 2 port, single USB-C, SD card reader. All models come with freebie - USB-C to HDMI & displayport adapter.
Price is higher by $300 than outgoing model.

What we know today as the base MBP - the one without touchbar, with two USB-C ports would be known macbook 15"

Maybe in the future, but not now.

USB C is still new and not ubiquitous.

They fob off any decent refreshes for years and then jump the gun too much in one go with regard to ditching ports and shrinking it, while at the same time gimping in other areas such as battery life, RAM options and graphics.

Their product cycles are a complete mess. You buy a new Macbook and a new iPhone and you can't even connect them without buying a dongle.

Apple have a reputation for having complete control over both the hardware and the software, so it just works. That seems to have completely gone out the window with the two recent keynotes.

I just realise this...how on earth does this happen?? Unless they make a cable with thunderbolt/USB-C on one end and Lightning on the other?

Well for iOS devices they don't want you to use cables anyway. They expect everything to be done on wifi. Same way Google wants everything to be done online. Both ideas are flawed when current connection speeds are applied.

That's the state of their lineup. Hey - you want your MBP work with anything connected to your iMac or Mac Pro? Tough excrement. Dongle yourself up (BTW, we make no USB-C to firewire converters in any way shape and form, so chuck that away). Hey - you want to hook your MBP to external display, there isn't one in the range and Apple said (the very same evening) they are no longer interested in making monitors for us... Hey - you are a musician and removed audio in, but don't worry, there are plenty of external devices for your "oozb-see" equipped ... amm... oh... well... what, not even Beats branded one?

...

I know it's an oft-used phrase, but in this case it's certainly true.. "It wouldn't shave happened under Jobs"

Apple, I fear, are falling victim to hubris on a massive scale.
