Hey guys, I'm currently gaming off of a 1080p 50'' TV.

I know i can hear the cringing already.

I'm waiting for a monitor I like to drop into price range probably won't happen for another 1 or 2 years) so I'm stuck at 1080p for now.

Can someone reccomend me a nice 1080p card which will max out every game? I believe its got to be very possible at this point in time. I only game on a TV and im not a competitive player so 60fps makes me happy enough for now.

Cheaper the better as this is a temporary solution if the gaming bug bites me.

4670k, 8GB RAM, SSD

Would prefer to stay with Nvidia, on a GTX 670atm

Not sure about overclockers currently, but you can get a custom cooled Nvidia 1060 6GB for £230 give or take, but maybe if you're not a major gamer you might find more value for money in an AMD RX470, I think they're well under £200, or an RX480 for similar price/performance to the 1060 but worse overclocking and higher power/temp, albeit slightly better DX12 performance.

2nd hand 970 gtx go for 100 quid which is 1060 gb performance.plays anything 1080 maxxed.

1060 isnt worth 200 plus.

970 isn't a bad buy second hand if you don't mind 4GB ram, but the 1060 is 15% faster at stock (neck and neck with a 980 pretty much), but obviously has a couple of GB extra ram and also better DX12 performance, so a tad more future proof.

I still have my old 970 in my daughters system, and I've owned a 980 too. All can play 'most' games at their highest settings at 1080p.

Particularly with the price cut, this is a great card. Reviews of it are positive in regard to temperature and noise. The 2 year warranty is merely okay (perhaps its biggest negative). But KFA2 does have a UK based RMA centre, so that's great.

If I was looking for a 1060 I would probably get this card, if price is the main barrier. Also, make sure to ignore that boost clock figure. 1759MHz does seem low, but that's more of an absolute minimum, than a 'real' speed. Realistically, it should boost to 1.9ghz+ with GPU Boost 3.0

so gtx 1060?

Hmm my friend does have a 980 he's willing to sell to me for 150-200ish but i assume a 1060 would be better and more future proof for the few extra £?

The 1070/1080 just seems wayyyyyyy too expensive at present . I swear they were way cheaper a few months ago!

If you are talking about futureproof - I had the GTX660 and have a GTX960. The AMD equivalents have on average appeared to have fared better as time progresses.

At under £200,the RX470 4GB will outlast any GTX1060 3GB variant IMHO.

Things are close between the GTX1060 6GB and RX480 8GB,but looking at how old your current card is,I probably would not want to keep a GTX1060 6GB for three years though,if the past scenarios happen again.

If you don't believe me,look where the HD7950/R9 280 and HD7970/R9 280X fare in relation to your current card today and the GTX660TI 2GB. Remember the GTX670 2GB was meant to be equal to a HD7970 at launch, and the GTX680 was 10% to 20% faster. The GTX660TI was meant to be the same as the HD7950/HD7950BE.

The GTX970 and GTX980 started off with an advantage over the R9 290/390 series, but within a year or so the same thing started to happened.

The problem is Volta might be here at the end of next year or early 2018,as Pascal looks more like a stop-gap due to the Volta delays, and Volta is probably where it is at.

The GTX980 is a good deal for £150 though, especially over the GTX1060 3GB,but I get the increasing feeling that Nvidia cards tend to be best to buy whilst they are still current. However,I do think the GTX1060 6GB will start to push ahead more and more in the next year over the GTX980 IMHO.

Just to remind people on here, you asked for a value for money card - also it's cheap temp stop gap scenario. Under zero circumstances can I say spending over £200 on a temp card to be good value for money.

Get a second hand card cheap, £100 will get you a GTX970 and that'll play 1080p games no problem. I had one and can say that for a fact. Don't be spending £200+ on a temp card, madness.

EDIT : Re-reading your post OP....2 years isn't really a stop gap is it? 3 months is a stop gap....

Just buy a new card and be done with it.

Geforce cards have a very short life these days before performance seems to drop off. Go with AMD if you want longevity (and smoother DX12 performance).

dx12 is at the moment worse in performance than dx11 also only in a handful of games so dont dive in double footed with dx12 sales speeches.

biggest game of this year is bf1 check dx12 performance in that.its terrible.if that isnt fixed in next couple of months.you will know DX12 is over already and a joke.

I have a ATI 6950 2GB. How does the Nvidia equilviant of that period fare in games now? Witcher 3 is still playable on my system 1900x1200.

1060 6gb as mentioned above
equal to 980 performance, less power-draw
Slapped an EK-Thermosphere on a mini and it runs below 40c and OC's well
Cant ask for more on a 1080p machine
