Do you ever get wound up by knowledge you think people should have?

There are two sayings I usually say to myself. I'm still not sure which one is correct.

People are stupid and I'm normal

People are normal and I'm super intelligent

Here we go. Just had someone who can't read call the office.

Them - "I can't print anything"
Me - "OK, what does it say on the screen on your printer?"
Them - "It says, 'load paper in bottom paper tray'"
Me - "OK, do you have some paper?"
Them - "Yes, should I put it in the bottom paper tray?"
Me - "Erm, yes"
Them - "Great, thanks"

2 minutes later

Them - "Hi, it's me again, any chance you could come over and do it for me?"

I despair sometimes......

The lobotomized ********* generation.

The silver haired scared of technology generation.

Most people are just thick in general, they don't have a clue about anything.

I cross a main road about 6 times a week taking my daughter to and from school.
The number of idiots who hit the button for the crossing all the time hoping the lights will change faster.

People who stand to wait for the traffic to stop when if they just looked to the left they would see the light is on red.

People who don't even bother and just stand there and move with the masses.

That's just crossing the road don't get me started on computer repairs and shopping!

The is not much I cannot do these days thanks to google that's for sure.;)

Bottom line is I think its laziness and ignorance or a combination of both, it can and often does make my blood boil.

I used to just look at the red light and assume people would stop - I almost got hit by a car... I now check for the cars physically stopping.

I just cannot understand how people don't understand things like chip and pin, like how credit cards work, like how a kite needs the wind behind you?...

This weekend I was asked why a kite wouldn't fly, the person flying it said they didn't want to be downwind as the sun was in their eyes.....

Was I brought up different? I generally understand most common daily tasks or technology..

I just don't get it..

Yes I know it's not the best written post. I was in a rush!

Everyone has different skills, everyones brains stop working from time to time. Some people just think it's easier to get someone else to do it.

People are also not daft and why didn't you type your post when you weren't in a rush. Jees. lol

What about people who disregard any aspect of politics (local or geopolitical) because they genuinely believe they will have no influence on the situation. Isn't that just a road to ruin? Surely anybody who is intelligent enough to grasp it should grasp it? We are not talking stupid people here either

I think thats more of a genuine interest in politics or not?

I find politics interesting and follow the news. But my gf doesn't and she is far from stupid. She just doesn't have any interest in it.

How much does she know though? Can she tell you who the main political figures are?

One of my friends said to me that she voted for Brexit for example. She said it was unfair that the vote should be questioned as the people have voted now. I said to her that why would the election (via a vote) of a pro eu party with a mandate for staying in the EU be any less democratic? She said they were just words and she had no idea what I was on about.

She later asked me who Teresa May was...

How much does she know though? Can she tell you who the main political figures are?

She could tell you who the prime minister is and who Boris is along with the current presidential nominees, she would recognise some political names but not many of them, nor the positions they hold. She also couldn't tell you much of the recent news about them.

Though I take the OPs statement as one of general knowledge, not specific technical details, so things you just have to be sentient to be aware of.

Like talking to a girl at work (early 20's) and she didn't know where Scotland was....seriously, she didn't know where ****ing Scotland was, she looked at me confused when I was talking about the weather map on the news, and you know, it's the bit on top of England....nope, nothing...

So yes the above is an extreme example, but I come across the same type of thing often and yes OP, it winds me up every time.

Just recently I was talking to someone and mentioned the LHC, Large Hadron Collider, now I don't expect people to know how it works, or even any technical information about what it does.....but really, they had never even heard of it at all...it's not like it's been massive headline news many times over the last few years....

Agreed, apart from the 'teaching them General Knowledge' - it's not taught, it's gained by being sentient, looking at the world around you and not having your nose in Facebook/Social Media 24/7

We really do seem to be socially devolving into the lowest common denominator.

Not going to lie, I had to Google this - "Large Hadron Collider".

Now i know what it is :) but i won't retain it as it doesn't really interest me.

Aye that's more of an interest thing.

I know so.eome who knew nothing about the Charlie Hebdo incident, purely because they don't watch TV or listen to the radio.

I am in less of a rush now.

I don't expect the older generation to know computers too well. That's a technology thing.

I DO expect an adult to know where Scotland is, or how many mins there are in an hour etc.

I once had to explain to a colleague that who questioned why a 2 hour exam was made up of 120 mins. This person works in education.

I know people have brain farts and sometimes have a moment but seriously, I talk to some of the younger generation 16-20 years old and they don't have a clue! I don't consider knowing what is going on in Eastenders or what is going on in TOWIE a life skill or something you need to get far in life. Knowing how miles per hour work, what temp water boils or how to unblock a sink is far more useful.

I am 37 so perhaps I am too old for my age.

re: girlfriend comment? yeah she comes out with some corkers. Super talented accountant but doesn't know that you shouldn't put oil on the brake pads of the bike while oiling the chainset...

Asked wife what Large Hadron Collider is - she said it's in second drawer down with saucepans :D
She's probably posting in a similar thread on WivesUK, saying that her dozy husband had to ask what a Large Handled Colander was!!

I am 72 and was counting internet dependent devices in house - got to 11 and don't have any gaming thingies.
Really? Wow...
I only have the PC. I sometimes let Wifey download a complete TV series on her Sky box, but that's about it!

I do online banking - pay all bills online - got swipe card and didn't start all this till my middle 40's
Likewise, but only because we moved to the 'countryside' and the nearest place to do any of that is a 2-3 hour walk away.

Guy in our work never knew what a drone was, whilst we were talking about it for the use of sports. This guys is an electronics technician. :/
Some friends don't know what Windows10 does and have never used Windows, despite being IT Support.... for Unix.
All depends on what areas of the field you're into... and whether they're trolling you!

Agreed none of those examples related to common sense I agree, that wasn't my point, people lack it either way.
Common sense and common knowledge are different, though.

Your phone hasn't allowed that?
Some didn't, no. Even the Android ones.
But again, not knowing about a device feature that isn't part of the mainstream activities covered in the User Guide isn't an indicator of common sense, intellect or intelligence. It just means you never knew it could do that.

I always wonder why some people don't want to try to figure things out for themselves.
Just not interested enough to care and have people around to do it for them/better than they ever could.
I tend to find people like that are also exceedingly fussy about doing other things in a very exact way... Can't take 50 seconds out to learn how to sort your mouse out so it fits your hand, but will drive 90 miles to find the exact right brand of tea (rather than ordering it online) and then take the greatest of pains to ensure it is brewed and made in exactly the way you insist it should be? I seem to have a lot of friends like that... who probably like me because I do the mindless menial stuff that they can't be bothered with!!

Why they ask questions that they could have Googled in less time than it takes to write an email or walk over to ask.
Google can't interpret body language and tailor its answers to the nuances and subtexts of human speech?
Or maybe they come to you because they secretly fancy you....

Or spent a bit of time experimenting. Who doesn't like experimenting?
Depends what they might break/delete in the process of experimenting.

But I guess people without the probing/analysing/playing/experimenting mindset don't find it enjoyable??
Some would even say stressful, time-consuming, too much effort...

and using self service checkouts.
Now that's not fair.... bloody things are purpose-programmed to be dumb and awkward.
'Use own bags?' Yes... but can't place bag in the bagging area to bag your shopping, because it registers.
'Surprise item in the bagging area?' Surprise??!! Is it a nice surprise? Have I won something? Cor, thanks Morrisons... what have I won?
Item barcode not yet registered by the Saturday Boy? Please wait 10 minutes while Maria the minimum wage Assistant finishes her fag and lollops on over, knowing full well she's left her Clear Fault fob back outside in the fag shelter.... and she's under 18 anyway so eventually still has to summon her manager to sort it out.
Are you done, now? Nope. You still have to pay, but whatever method you use must be the exact right way round, presented within and for a specific (but undisclosed) period of time only and even then is subject to random ComputerSaysNoooooo errors, because we feel like it.

Besides, the checkout girls in Waitrose are far faster at scanning than me and far, FAR better looking than either Minimum-Wage Maria or the reflection in the Self-Serve touchscreen!!

One could also ask why it is that the younger generation seem to lack the ability to simple DIY tasks where to the older generation nothing was too difficult. We all have different levels of knowledge and it does not make someone less intelligent because they do not know something I do and vice versa.

I thought it was me being a thicko - I hate those supermarket self checkouts.

I sat by one once and every 10 yr old that walked up -wizz wizz wizz - done and paid - - When I get there a voice says - sorry you are to old to use these :D
