I'm after an 1155 mobo for a 2500k and i'm not having much luck in the MM so i've been looking on ebay. I know it is always a bit of a gamble but would guys buy a motherboard for £40 off ebay and hope for the best?

Personally i don't like ebay. Nothing but hassle.

I'd sit tight and wait for something to come up on the members market.

I'll probably be putting mine on there once the 7700k is released :)

I have bought second hand bits off EBay in the past.
The last board I bought, which was over three years back now was the Sabertooth P67. It was going to be the base of my new system at the time. I had no other bits to fit that board so when I got it I just left it in the box.
When I got a chip to fit, about three to four months later I got a right shock. All the pins and I mean all were squashed. I had bought a right lemon.
After many weeks of back and forth contacting eBay and trying to contact the seller I finally gave up, counted my losses and moved on.
I went to a proper shop and bought the Sabertooth Z77, which I still run to this day.
Which shop ? From OCUK of course and from that day I have never bought my PC bits from anywhere else.

I kept the P67 until a few weeks back actually just to remind me of how stupid I can be.

As for buying owt from eBay, the only thing I get is strimmer line for my Black n Decker.

I would say if you can afford to loose £40, take the gamble. Make sure as soon at it arrives to check it over with a very keen eye on the pins.

better advice would be buy the most likely to be faulty LAST, once you have access to the parts to test them

I have purchased several items that turned out to be faulty (out of several 100), and some have been damaged in transit, all issues resolved by the sellers without any trouble...

If in your situation, as long as I had all the other bits so when mobo arrives I can test it, yes I would buy from ebay. I'd make sure the listing had detailed photo of socket and good resolution image of rest of PCB.

I'd also ask the seller via ebay about the socket pins and confirm motherboard is functioning. I would aim to buy only from a seller with 100% positive feedback for selling items.

I would only pay via paypal, so if item is faulty regardless of buyer not taking returns raising a dispute using PayPal will get you your money back.

I bought my current z77 sabertooth motherboard and samsung 830 ssd from ebay and both have been pretty much flawless. In the paat i have also bought a gtx 780 without a problem.

The only issue i have ever had was with a cpu mobo bundle where the cpu had been poorly lapped causing awful temps. I asked the buyer for my money back and we even managed to get eBay to pay for postage.

However 1155 board prices are through the roof on ebay as people are desperate to hang onto their sandy bridge cpus. So £40 might be a bit of a push.

I have bought several motherboards from ebay, some of which were new and got a massive saving, some which were used with all the bits. I only ever had a problem with one of them and that was replaced with no hassle by the seller. At the end of the day if you buy something sold as working just send it back. Most sellers are ok but every now and then you come across one that you have to open a case against and 9/10 ebay sides with the buyer.

As stated above though, you will be lucky to get a decent 1155 board for £40. Even in our MM you would be lucky to get a good one for that.

jeeeeeezzzzz

I have just looked on ebay for at Asus 1155 boards. My oh my !!!
Why are they so much ?

Think I will put my Sabertooth Z77 up there. Put a bit to and upgrade to Z170..

I have bought quite a few boards on ebay, mainly when I was doing lots of benching and wanted to try different boards (and vmod them)

Very rarely had a dud, even some good overclockers.

Never had one doa and any that smoked I may have killed myself.

Only worth it if your making a decent saving over the price of a new board. For a few quid more id buy from ocuk

My mate bought mobo on bay, turned out 2 ram slots were faulty, he managed to get a hefty refund so the mobo ended up costing him £30, thing is, if I had not tested it for him when building he wouldn't have realised

Don't. I bought one with bent CPU pins and seller denied all knowledge. EBay swiftly reimbursed.

so whats the issue then, you got your money back.
these boards are getting as rare as x58 boards so its a gamble when they come up.
ebay is a buyers market your covered.

I dont suppose you guys could help me pick a mini-itx 1155 board? There's a quite a few on ebay but i'm struggling to know which ones are meant for consumer/gamers and which ones are more for workstations or whatever. It's also unclear which ones are B3 and which ones aren't.

Ebay is even safer to buy from than the MM!

I bought an Asus RIVE and it arrived with a pin bent. It was simple and straight forward to get my money back. I had no concerns whether I would get my money back and I did. You are generally covered by the The Consumer Contracts Regulations when buying from Ebay.

I once bought a 2600k CPU from Cupra on the MM and he stated that it past an Intel burn at 5.2Ghz. I've been overclocking every CPU since Celeron 300a days and tried the CPU in 3 different motherboards, including the same one he said he did it on and I couldn't get it past 4.5Ghz. (He'd most likely just sent me a different 2600k) When I tried to get my money back even with the help of a mod offering to serve as escrow he wouldn't refund me. The guy I eventually sold it to could not get it past 4.5Ghz either. At least on Ebay if something is not as described then it's pretty painless to get a refund and they also pay for return postage.
