Anyone have any experience of gigabyte laptops?

I'm deliberating if I should shell out the readies for a 1070 equipped laptop.

All the manufacturers seem to have very similar specs aside from the gfx cards.
Budget sub 2k.
Been looking at the 17" screens. Not interested in 4k res.

Will be used for gaming and some cad plus other stuff like that.

Browsing through this subforum I'm inclined to avoid msi based on one thread in particular. But laptops are new territory for me sooo...

Anything I should know about these?

They're out, but not with the 120hz G-Sync panels.

Thanks, good to know, I'm looking at the moment :)

I have a Alienware m17x r4 which has been a fantastic laptop so wouldn't hesitate buying another.

I also have a MSI GT72 and my son Lenovo gaming laptop but can't remember the model number, out of the 3 Alienware is by far the best.

Why did you prefer the aw ? currently debating aw 17 vs msi stealth pro

Build quality is better, cooling is excellent I rarely get it to make fan noise, I prefer the keyboard which has a UK full size enter key.

I am looking at the moment and the Razer certainly looks good but not had a play with it yet, it is expensive for a 13" laptop and I think I read it's only DDR3?

I does look nice but I think I need 15".

aorus edition

Thanks guys. I'll check them out; they certainly look subtle and understated (unlike some of the gaudy baubles I've seen elsewhere).

However, I can foresee a serious case of mission creep where my budget is concerned :( :D

My thinking was for a machine that would have a certain amount of lifespan. I know laptops will never rival a desktop where upgradability is concerned but a high enough spec machine ought to have a good run before it becomes obsolete.

I'll have a look about at the others mentioned - any idea on release dates / model # so I can have a browse? I'm still trying to figure out laptop nomenclature.

If I have any more questions or comments I'll post back here.

No thunderbolt 3 no buy IMO!

I'm still in two minds about eGPU/Thunderbolt 3.

Being able to extend the life of a laptop via eGPU is great....but will I actually use it? I'm still not sure.

It's already hard enough to fill my requirements (120hz and G-sync) that adding TB3 to the list of wants limits my options to just one, which is currently unavailable with no ETA. :(

I ordered a Razer Blade and Razer Core the other day. Delivery from the 17th. So they are available...

The Razor Blade doesn't have a 120hz AND G-Sync screen. To my knowledge it's only Asus, Aorus and Alienware offering both 120hz and G-Sync.

The Asus is a monster. Aorus is short on stock and Dell won't have 120hz Alienware screens until Mid November.

I'm happy with gaming at 1080p on my QHD touchscreen monitor @ 60Hz. I have my Acer Predator 100Hz ultrawide 3440x1440p if I want to connect to anything bigger:)

I had a chat with Dell customer support today, they said they have no dates for the 120hz screens in the UK, they couldn't even say it would be in the next month or 2.

I bought a gigabyte laptop about three years ago for use at work and to play games on when I travel. 14 inch 1080p IPS screen and a 760m gpu. I have had no issues with it other than the battery life isn't great but I knew that when I bought it.

The Alienware 15's and 17's both have a 1440p 120Ghz G-sync panel available right now which you can spec and select on the Dell website (though I'm not convinced there's any point to getting one particularly if you're only getting a 1060 as you'll likely not get any higher than 60fps output from the card anyway)

I do think the Alienware's have become much more 'mature' looking which is a good thing as the previous models looked so stupid but the price is unaffordable imho - 2.1k for a 1070 with 8GB ram and 128GB ssd? ridiculous

Do you know Dell will price match?

Find a laptop cheaper on a list of sites they have with the same spec and they will match it.

Pretty sure that's not applicable to the Alienware or XPS lineup as I've actually discussed this with Dell and was told the same?

The most they will offer is a flat 10% discount on AW machines and 8% discount on XPS - the same they intend to offer on Black Friday and basically their 'flash sales' all year round according to who I spoke to

If you look on the Alienware page under configurations for any of the laptops, just above add to basket there is a link to the price match guarantee, I don't see exclusions for XPS or Alienware.

I have price matched against alienware in the past.
