Fun/exciting car - recommend me?

I had the following in the S2000:

Alpine X305 head unit
Alpine Imprint module
Hertz HE4 4x100W amp - 2 x 200W bridged in to the componants
Audison SX4 4 x 100W amp - 2 x 200W bridged in to the subs
Hertz componants in the doors (can't remember the model but they were about £400)
2 x JL 10" subs in a custom box sunk in to the space where the tool box goes in the boot
Amps were on a custom platform where the spare wheel goes.
Doors were all covered in Dynamat inside the skins

It sounded very good indeed.

very nice,

with the DSP Carver you have 4 subs, 2 in the footwell and 2 behind you. you then have 4 mid range speakers, 2 in the doors and 2 behind you. then 2 tweeters one at either side.

why are the s200's so expensive though compared to z4's. older s2000 is like double the price.

that s2000 is sweet! I do want one, but maybe later - doubt I'll be able to justify one looking at the prices of them, only going up.

Aristo would be brilliant! Had a MR2 mk1, a Mk2 NA and turbo all excellent choices, but as you said not your cup of tea. How about a mercedes CL500 i was looking at one for sale near me months ago, 5L V8 sounded awesome! but i needed t 4 door car. :(

aristo indeed would be great! but I'd have to import one, I'd probably go with a soarer :o

Just had a thought, has your insurance gone down now? If its still silly then you need to check out that for each of these cars as well. No point in getting any of these if it will cost 3K to insure for you.

yeah by over 1k  it'll never be comparable to you guys simply because of my post code and location, people with 10 years ncb still end up paying 1k+/year

Rilot - Did you have an induction kit fitted or just take off the airbox lid, I can't remember?

Videos like that make me want to keep mine rather than upgrade - if I had the space I would be pushing to keep mine and another! Such fun on a sunny morning like today!

that does sound pretty good eh :o

Rilot - was your on stock exhaust system? I was looking at invidia as a potential upgrade if I end up in an s2000.

Losing the airbox lid makes a pretty awesome noise to be honest! I definitely suffer with heat soak though, so if it were to become my forever car I would invest in a proper cold air feed. Some pops and bangs would be good on the exhaust too.

If you haven't owned a Scooby and have a soft spot, then do it, you won't regret it.

Personally for that budget I would get a Type-R classic import. You get the active centre diff which makes a lot of difference to the handling, but ultimately it'll come down to how good a driver you are. A few subtle chassis changes (not talking silly coilovers or anything like that) and it'll be a fantastic handling car which not much else is going to better.

The later Imprezas are great too, but heavier so don't handle as well. Depends what you prefer really.

Good shout but good Type Rs are getting closer to double the OPs budget.

You would get a decent late classic Type RA for under £7K no problem. No DCCD but unless you're a driving god then I doubt you'd really miss it. If you really insisted on DCCD then older STI RA might be in budget.

Late RA has same turbo as Type R (VF28 or VF29) and same ratios on the box (98-00 cars) - I'm not 100% on whether engine internals are different but RAs are equally likely to be reliable or not than STIs. IIRC RAs have ABS, STI RA and Type R with DCCD don't have ABS. Type Rs have a quicker steering rack and IIRC maybe STI RA too.

Trick is finding a good one.

It's a combination of a lot of things.

The S2000 is definitely more of a 'scene' car than the Z4 is. Most people wont buy for that reason, but many people will.

In my opinion the S2000 has a timeless design and looks compared to the Z4. The older Z4s look very dated whereas a well kept S2000 still looks sharp. This is personal opinion and not everyone might agree. Shaggy looking 04s and later which have plastic rear screens in the roof that have been poorly maintained do not look so fresh.

The engine and gearbox. Just drive one, don't need to say anymore.

They have been end of life since 2009 and bar some rumours of a successor they are no longer made in any guise whatsoever. They will only become rarer as a result. A Z4 of a certain age isn't going to command the same rarity/desirability factor, especially seeing as it's still a current model which will continue to feed the second hand market.

I had a K&N FIPK intake and had the standard exhaust modified to bypass half of each back-box. This gave it a fruity sound without the drone.
I tried an aftermarket cat-back system and the drone was just unbearable.

Vid of the exhaust note just after it was done:

Mercedes SLK350 are not what might immediately spring to mind, but they're meant to be very good.

Exhaust mod is high on my list of things to do - again need to make a decision about keep vs sell first. Sounds great! How are you enjoying the Jag? Bit more refined than the S2k!

Sure fella what you wan to know?

What to look out for when going to buy, visually, when driving etc

Also what you've had to replace and general costs etc, although I know this shouldn't be too much.

Maybe what you like/like most about the car? :)

Any reasons not to buy? :p

Quite surprised at this at it is essentially a bolt on thing now. People even sell manifold and downpipe kits. Only thing you really need to do is drill the sump and sort out a water feed for the turbo. Rest is pretty much plug and play.

Few days late, but you don't even have to drill the sump. Some people complain that it doesn't give an adequate oil return path but 5000 miles later and I get no oil related smoke so I'd imagine most problems people seem to have is user error

The hardest part of a turbo conversion on an MX5 is either the million inevitably rusty bolts you'll encounter, or spliting the housings on the turbo to ensure the oil drain and compressor outlet are in the right locations

Thanks for all the replies, back to this.. with a quesion.

It's now between z4 3.0 and 350z.

Just wondering how are the auto boxes in z4s? Any benefit of going for that over manual?

I drive a decent amount in traffic so auto is hands down the winner here but how is it as far as fun goes, b-roads for example?

It's an older box so relatively slow (but good for its time), whilst acceptable/desirable in a 3 or 530 I can't see why anyone would want it in a z4.

You wouldn't buy a manual 7 series
