Some of you may smirk but this was a major decision for me.
I have spent the last 17 years with this rock covers band and last night me and the lead guitarist gave our notice in - http://www.disturbinthepeace.co.uk

This has taken me two years to do this so it wasn't a light decision. I really thought at 58 and 46 years gigging I was going to end my music days with this band but I could take no more. Over the last two years I've been asking for new material to do but nothing has happened. Every night I get on stage I die a little with the realisation I'm going to be doing the same old songs over & over & over again.
I was thrilled when a few month ago I told the lead guitarist and he thought the same thing so we have got something else in place doing stuff that nobody does in our area.
We have 3 gigs to do and that's it, I'll be losing 3 brothers/close friends but it had to be done for my sanity.
Yeah, I know it's only a 2p covers band but 3 of us have had 17 years together, 4 of us have had 10 years together and all 5 of us have had 8 years together, that's a lot of invested time in people so it feels like a marriage breakup. In fact at 1am this morning we were discussing what belongs to who etc.

Had to get it off my chest because I'm sitting here thinking 'What have I done, why have I broken up the marriage?'.

Because you weren't in love anymore and the relationship as it is now made you unhappy.

So don't dwell on what you what feel you have lost, because you wouldn't be here if it hadn't gone already a long time ago, but feel good about the time you had.

It's still hard though, at least kids aren't involved.

Am i right in thinking you have some health issues, something bone related? I am probably wrong haha.

But maybe that is on your mind also if it is correct.

Will you and the lead guitarist be watching Independence Day 1 and 2 together with lots of kisses and cuddles?

:p

Definitely but he's more DC where I'm Marvel so it could cause problems.

That is a MAJOR part of the decision also.
Going out in a rock band is buggering us both up health wise. He has a non malignant tumour in his brain called a Carcinoma (sp!) and a few month ago he had a 1hr epileptic fit. I have diabetes problems and singing rock material really takes it out of me where my blood sugars go low. My osteoporosis is getting worse and when I come off stage I'm buggered because I can't keep still, I've also been told I need a new right knee. We hope that the new band playing Pink Floyd, Neil Young etc won't take too much out of us and we'll be round longer.

Thanks, i thought i remembered something in the back of my mind about illness, can relate to some of it, but i aint no musician haha.

I have come around to putting my health first before anything these days, we think we are invincible us men.

Why will you 'lose 3 brothers/close friends'?

If they were/are that close, they would/will surely respect your decision.

Good luck.

You did the Alpha thing SexyGreyFox, you wasn't happy so you left, instead of slowly dying everyday like a beta.

That must have been a really hard decision, but if you aren't happy then it's probably for the best - Who knows, maybe you and the guitarist could start up something new and fresh, and it could be a really great new time in your life! Good luck!

They do respect and they know they need a new start. The adverts have already gone in with my help and already they have a few interets.
When I say 'lose' I mean I've been with these guys 1 or 2 times a week for 17 years.

We already have a new softer band doing Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Travelin Wilburys etc.
What is weird is that after 3 gigs I won't be screaming to an audience again.

Easy money to be made in these pub bands is it not?

I don't know what the going rate is for a gig but I know the local parish council paid £350 each to 3 local bands to play 1 hour slots at the local summer fair day a few months ago. I know this as the council publish their expenses along with their meeting minutes on their 2 bit website.

I'm going back to 2004 time but remember a boy band charged £2,500 on either the new years or Xmas eve.... And were ****
