Surface Pro 4, Surface Book or Dell XPS 13

I've ordered the stealth!

Not going to risk another dell

Noice! :) Just can't get enough of that form factor.

From what I've seen so long as there aren't any real issues it is looking to arrive within a week of ordering. Though, occasionally (again, from what I've heard) they don't send out the shipping confirmations quite as regular as would be nice but people do still get them within a week.

I will bug them if they don't get back to me soon.

How can you get used to a 12" screen?

well I used to have a surface pro 3 at work, either way it will be connected to a dell 2515h when im working at home, and obviously when I'm out and about (or in bed) it's nice to have something a bit small and lighter than a regular 15" laptop. Having 1440p both on laptop and external monitor is nice.

but if I'm honest, the black metal and light up keys were what sold it to me lol

I've also got one of these

Single cable to laptop gives you power, display and a usb3 hub. The only issue is that the cable to the laptop isn't very long meaning you have a nest of cables on the table going into the hub. I've ordered quite a thick usb-c extension cable which hopefully means the hub can sit behind the desk out of sight.

ok, I've changed my mind yet again

The fingerprints on the metal casing and glare from the screen has turned me away from the blade. That, and I think the 12.5" screen is really pushing the limits. The dell I had was about right for me, so trying another xps 13.

It's the one I really want, just hope the coil whine isn't too bad on this one. If it is, then there's nothing on the market I like.

So I ordered a Razer Blade Stealth the other day direct from Razer. Unfortunately, there aren't all that many places in the UK to get them from. Since then I've heard a decent chunk of horror stories about their support and about the order backlog. I don't know if anyone here actually wanted to get one but it might be worth waiting to buy from elsewhere if that becomes a possibility later on.

I've not had an order shipping confirmation yet and the impulse purchase part of my brain needs it to hurry up and arrive! :D

There's nowhere else to order from the UK is there  Razer CS told me there is no intention to use third party retailers in the UK in the near future, so the only place to buy from is Razerzone. They did confirm it's a two year warranty though - one year with manufacture (Razer) and one with reseller (Razerzone).

The next question then is 13 or 15.

Looks
13 looks better than 15. Everything fits.

Hardware
13 latest processor. Although the difference isn't big enough to write off 6th Generation. The RAM and SSD would be the same and upgradable in both models.

Screen
I would be getting the FHD (1080p) screen. The amount of space on the 15 is a HUGE benefit for web design. Being able to look at the code at the bottom and see the site in the top is something I do a lot. It will also help with photoshop and photography.

Keyboard
Why didn't they make a bigger keyboard on the 15? It just looks weird...

13 with an external monitor is the best of both worlds

also, the ram on the 13 is soldered, but you can replace the ssd

Unfortunately I don't have anywhere to put the monitor. It's good to know about the RAM on the 13 though! Makes that decision easier.

Thanks

I have a surface book / SP4 & Razer blade 2015, I also have had every XPS.

My choice would be between the Surface Book and the razer blade 1080p matt.
I love them both for different reasons:

Surface book:
Great keyboard, amazing battery, doesn't get hot or loud even when gaming, being able to draw on it and the surface dock is brilliant.

Razer:
Matt screen looks great and doesn't have glare like most of the others, performance, build quality yet you can also upgrade the SSD and WIFI

I hate the XPS machines with a passion. I have had nothing but pain with them. The matt screen although looks great has an incredibly slow response time and PWM at low brightness which made me feel sick.
The dell docks are incredibly buggy
The keyboard feels horrible but the layout is good

Love my Dell XPS 13 9550 and went through the same choices with the SP3/XPS 13 9443.

Wouldn't change it now, thought the touch was a fad but its handy for the forums :)

Doesn't the Dell have a far better battery life? The reviews I saw said the Surface Book battery was pretty bad.

I'd order a Razer tomorrow but the pricing is out of my price range - £1,700 is too much for a Windows laptop and my needs.

Notebookreviews said the same thing about the response rates but the colours are decent so swings and roundabouts. For gaming I'd probably get a proper desktop.

The reviews I saw said the Surface Book gets 8-10 hours of use... that's pretty good in my book, especially for a Windows laptop.

My early 2016 XPS 15 struggled to manage more than 4 hours, but it was the 4k screen, so that won't have helped. I hear the new Kaby Lake XPS13s manage much better.

Just a heads up guys

Razor customer services is appalling!

Laptop hasn't left their factory yet, but it's too late to cancel it. Obviously the only way of talking to someone is either over email (one reply every 24hrs), or calling their US number. They say I have to pay to return it.

Whilst I'm miffed, I think I dodged a bullet. Imagine if I did want the laptop and had problems with it.

I've found their CS quite responsive by email, but sales staff are clearly different. You could try calling their German HQ http://www.razerzone.com/contact-us. Can't you just refuse to accept delivery when the courier delivers it?

Yeah can do, so long as they don't leave it with a neighbour if I'm at work.

Would be easier just to cancel the order since it's still at the factory. That's common sense though isn't it.

Thanks for the link!

Usually contract is not formed until its dispatched or sometimes even delivered... so you should be within your rights to cancel without charge.

It's only if it was a custom build that it's more difficult... but even then Apple/Dell let you cancel.

Well I had heard their service was supposed to be rubbish. It was just a set spec off the website. Wonder if the credit card company can just cancel it there end.

I expect it's more to do with their internal processes not allowing an order to be stopped once it has passed a certain step. A silly administrative issue that should not be the customer's problem.
