NVIDIA Adds Telemetry to Latest Drivers; Here's How to Disable It

I would, regardless of manufacturer. I spend too much time browsing the web etc and know what is what and they can have my browsing data, my crash reports, my game settings, what games I play, what games are on my PC etc. I really don't care as I have nothing to hide.

But that isn't the only issue. If it's personal data it can end up in the wrong hands and be used for ID fraud.

We don't know what else it can do, can they send traffic the other way? If so that is a massive security issue.

I would say that it is more about the way they went about this than actually what data they are getting off your system. The fact that they surreptitiously installed this software that is now stealing your data (Regardless of personal identification details or otherwise) just doesn't sit right with everyone.

If it was aggregate basic data then surely they should still ask for permission from you to do so and give you the option to opt out during the install. Common courtesy should have been followed as a matter of common sense.

:)

Here is a question for you all regardless of Gfx Card Manufacturer

Q. If you were given the heads up of what they wanted to data mine from you and gave you the opt out option during install, how many of you would actually say 'Yes' to it and carry on regardless?

That is a good question and if lots of these companies where clearer with what they were actually going to do with any data they collect, it would make people open their eyes I expect.

One thing to remember, you say that these companies should ask permission and give you the chance to opt out. Well basically they do ask you, remember those ridiculous EULA, you know the ones linked too on a download page, where there is a little asterix next to the download button, or listed as you install the software, but never read. That is the point where you agree to it.

*By clicking the "Download" button, you are confirming that you have read and agree to be bound by the End User License Agreement. Your download will begin immediately after clicking on the "Download" button. If you do not agree to these terms and conditions, you do not have a license or permission to use and/or download the software.

The above example is from the AMD driver download page.

The below example is from the Geforce experience installer.

EULA.jpg

Personally I think the whole EULA thing should be a lot clearer and not full of reams and reams of legalise speak.

But as it stands at the moment, this is the way it works and it is the same for so many companies and not just graphics card companies.

So NVidia can get hold of my bank details or my NI number, my passport etc or are you just being a little paranoid?

For me, it's the fact that there is no opt in or opt out with Nvidia. They just take your information. I should have the choice for them to snoop on what games I have installed etc. Especially if they sell this data on. What a cheek lol.

I have never installed GFE, and low and behold I had Nvidia telemetry running on my PC. Now gone through third party app. Nvidia should give us the choice.

I would say the same of AMD / Intel etc. These greedy gimps stealing our info xD

I understand Bud and there is many like yourself and I can see where you are coming from. I don't feel NVidia should be doing it either but as far as I go, I genuinely am not fussed about it.

Its best to be a little paranoid with the amount of times user data has been hacked and leaked from big company's. You might not care who can see what websites you visit but I prefer it if NVidia and others don't know what personal websites like banking sites that I visit. Sometimes you want to keep things personal and private for good reasons and not have it for everyone to see. Its not about having nothing to hide its about the right of privacy and anyway some people do have things to hide with perfectly good reasons to hide it.

Shield streaming still working after disabling them mate?

Sorry missed this, yep still works fine. The new nvidia controller service seems to have fixed gamepad compatibility in some older games which is nice.

I only unticked the telemetry stuff though, that said GFE updated yesterday so its probably been turned back on. :p

I am still use version 2.11.4.0

I only want it for Shadow play and I did not like the whole GFE 3 malarkey...

Anyway, if you want to stick to version 2, Just install the version you want to keep,

Click check for updates, it will download GFE3, do not install,

Go to C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\GeForce Experience\Update and Delete setup.exe...

It will not try to update when launching in the furure....

That didn't work for me :( it would constantly redownload GFE3 instead of letting me open GFE until I ripped all the update stuff out from the driver :S

It's not dead, you just have to be more active in maintaining it. Things like adblock, firewalls, modded host file, VPN etc are a must these days.

It's a war of information between corporations and the user.

Adblocker check!
Modifed windows 10 check!
Modified host file check!
Firewall check!
VPN check!

Even then you still have to be careful. Even some VPN software will try to bundle adware which collects data on you. Even ISPs collect data on you.
Mobiles are even worse, they are data mining heaven especially on android. I showed my friend at work how easy it was to hack his phone. Took a bootable version of Kali Linux on a external drive. Booted from the drive loaded Kali linux up. I told him to give me abit while he was connected to works WiFi and poop i took pictures using his front camera while he was chilling on Facebook. You can also take screen grabs browse their phone etc.

I know there are apps that access your phone like this. The permissions list for some apps is stupid.

Yep, phones are pretty vulnerable. Actually anything wifi is :/

I don't even know why I pay for broadband when I could just use next door's wifi for free ;)

another reason to buy AMD Radeon cards

FreeSync, Superior DX12 in a handful of titles, longer driver optimisation, no spyware, but absolute ****e at the high end since 980Ti.:p

Already tried it mate, still working.:)

AMD might not have "high end" stuff atm. But if for 1080 and 1440 at 60-80fps region, which is where most people are, they are good enough. After that it's just willy waving :P
