Confused as to which speakers to buy

I'm still intending to buy the HD650s (waiting for Black Friday), and the Schiit stack: Magni 2 Uber and Modi 2 (maybe Uber), but after reading a few threads on here I don't know whether to go for passive speakers and let the amp drive or go active?

Options to far:

Active:
Edifier R1600T3 £87.00

Passive:
Wharfedale Diamond 9.0 £60
Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 £100

Any thoughts?

Thanks :)

Diamond 9.1's any day of the week if you can house them as they are a fair bit bigger than 9.0's. The edifers don't have a particularly flat frequency response, having quite a dip in the mid range, plus having the amp inside reduces the internal volume and if it goes wrong, you have to replace the lot.

Personally for music, I think the best entry level setups are a small T-Amp and Bookshelf's.. QAcoustic/Dali that kind of thing...

The Q-Acoustic 2020i's for £120 sound great, and pair that with a small T-Amp, fed from your Schitt stuff I think you'd be quite a good setup.

I demo'd the Wharfedales, QAcoustics and smaller DALI's when I choose, and whilst I ended up with the DALI's, the QAcoustics also stood out, and are a great price.

Obviously you'd need a T-Amp or similar for passives, a Magni Uber is for headphones only and not meant to drive speakers.

If you got passives then you would either have to add a T-Amp just for the speakers, which could be plugged into the RCA outputs of the Magni 2 Uber or abandon the Schiit stack altogether and get something like the Creative X7 which has a good DAC, good headphone amp and a power amp for driving passive speakers.

Thanks, turns out you reviewed it back in 2014, just found this from searching on Google...

Do you have any preferences over the following may I ask...

Wharfedale Diamond 9.0 £60
Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 £100
Q-Acoustic 2020i £120
Dali Zensor Pico £160

What t-amp would be appropriate?

Depends on which speakers you go for and their power needs. T-Amps offer high power but lots of noise when pushed hard, so the aim is to get a T-Amp with a lot more power than you need. The T-Amps are only really noisy when driven hard, so if you can use them at fairly low to medium power they will perform well.

The SMSL A2 or A50 should do the job nicely while the SA98 and SA160 are probably going to be overkill.

You won't be disappointed by the Edifier's either.
Cheers, that's good to know. Used mainly for Spotify Premium 320kbps, bit of movies, a little Counter Strike.

I just didn't realise I would need something else! My to-buy list now stands at...

Headphones: Sennheiser HD650 £249.00
Headphone Amp: Schiit Magni 2 Uber £145.00
DAC: Schiit Modi 2 £100.00
DAC to Amp cables: Schiit PYST RCA £15.00
Speakers: Edifier R1600T3 £90.00

Rids57 - my understanding from a previous post was if I got the the Magni 2 Uber then I could connect the Edifier's using RCA cables and so no t-amp was required?

Forgive my n00bness!

That's pretty much the same setup I use, except my Edifiers are connected to my STX as I sometimes use Dolby virtual speaker when gaming.
