the heat shrink butt connector type

is it safe to assume if the cable fits in to the connector then its fine to use? it's for rear lights on a trailer

got a pack with blue red and yellow, the wire fits inside the red ones no problem, except the earth as its a bit thicker

any time I've seen them used on repairs/mods etc it's always the blue or yellow ones, can't remember seeing the red ones

wondering if there's a reason or if the blue ones are just cheaper/popular

The colours refer to the gauge range the connector is designed for. Does not really matter as long as you are getting a good crimp. I wouldn't use a connector in which the crimp doesn't grab the strands well enough, nor use one in which you are having to force the strands in. For lights I imagine reds are plenty enough for the gauge of the wire. Blues for the earth.

great thanks

just kinda assumed I'd use blue for some reason but red is fine, and tidier!
