I used IRC about 10 years ago in my Uni days. Can you suggest/private message a good place now?

Somewhere is active late at night, preferably UK based too

I wouldn't bother, just use Discord and get on the OCUK server.

Rizon and Quakenet are still popular.

IRC is a great place to chat, and since it's mostly used by older people these days, you're more likely to find intelligent discussion beyond memes and trolling.

Freenode is generally good for geeky things, as has been said.

I tend to only use IRC for channels that I've been in for the past 10 years though, I don't see the need to hunt down new ones.

I had another look at IRC a few weeks back. Lots of channels were full of bots rather than people. Bit sad really as I used to love IRC back in the day.
