H440 - increasing airflow in the top panel

Just did a little experiment. I have a 240 slimline rad in the roof (in addition to 360 in the front) and put the fans on full speed on the 240 only . . . water temp remained static at 37°.

Removed roof panel and it fairly quickly dropped water temps to 33° and may have gone lower.

So now I'm thinking of modding it to allow air to escape straight up rather than find it's way out the sides.

Has anyone drilled additional air flow holes in their's? Really don't want to make a mess of it and looking for inspiration

Your temps are fine. You won't gain anything from lowering them. But if you insist there is a couple easy "mods" you can do.

Easiest is to remove the grill strips from the top and front panels, especially the ones you can't see. I can only see my case from the left so it's the only one I use (I've painted it white but hopefully you can see what I mean). They are held on with 3 screws.

I also don't use the dust filter. It takes over a years worth of dust to raise temps as much as the filter does.

I've also removed my window as it got badly scratched and changed fan orientation such that air is directed out of the hole. Component temps dropped about 5C, internal air temp dropped about 10-15C.

Finally seal off the top section of the case so air can't travel back into the case or vice versa. This fella explains it far better than I can. https://www.reddit.com/r/NZXT/comments/59303z/h440_airflow_sectioning_improved_exhaust_blocked/

Nice one toaster. My window is scratched to hell as well, have spoken to NZXT who say they are sending me a replacement free of charge but the convo seems to have gone quiet after giving them proof of purchase. We'll see.

Have you thought about replacing the window with something more durable?

Just a quick google led me to this:

Not sure if I am aloud to link reddit links, so mods feel free to remove it, heres a link to an imgur with some pics of a mod someone done:

Literally mesh under the panel with big circle cutouts in the panel, should do the trick

Aha thanks mate. That job looks a little rough for my liking, but gives me some ideas!

Pah, NZXT just replied to say side panel shipping is $25. Not sure I feel like paying £20 for a panel that will only scratch again so easy

I got my sidepanel replaced for free (didn't even pay for shipping from the US) so not sure why they have decided that. The new one looked good for a while but I preferred no window to a perfectly clean one.

I guess they are sending a lot, considering even microfibre clothes leave swirl marks in this flimsy stuff.

I'm tempted to see how much a local glazier could cut me some glass for . .

Looks like I can get some 4mm toughened glass cut to size online for £5.63 lol. Sounds like a better option.

Can get it drilled or cut too, now I'm thinking what could be done in the roof!

You probably know this but mnpctech do a far superior replacement for the H440 clear panel.
Mine was scratched right out of the box and NZXT sent me one for free but that scratched very easily so I may well get one of the better ones for mine at some point.

I have actually purchased some precut toughened 4mm glass ready to replace the plastic with. Just need to get some decent adhesive!

Link to where you got the glass cut for such a small amount? If its a computer retailer then trust message it...

I just used a local glass company half a mile from my house, I'm sure I was a pain to them asking for a £12 piece of glass but they did it anyway. I doubt they would post though so I would say just email some local firms and see what they say
