Top end Ds/Citroën any good?

If they still made the C6 then that would be the way to go - hydro-pneumatic (they call it hydractive) suspension (plus it still looks cool). Failing that, the C5 could be had with the hydro-pneumatic suspension too. Even the C5 is now not sold in the UK, production of RHD cars ended this year IIRC.
The DS series are usually slated for being too firm in terms of ride.

+1 on Volvo's comfortable and supportive seats, the seats in my V70 are superb, second only to those in the Volvo FH truck at work which is air suspended!
Supremely comfortable cars but certainly boatish in the ride!
Get a Captains cap and grow a beard you'll feel like your on the high seas!
Wife has a DS3 THP. Good all round little car. Very comfortable and much quicker than it looks. Contrary to the above I don't think the ride is that hard. My biggest problem with it is the steering isn't very responsive. Other than that, it's basically a cheap alternative Cooper S with slightly weaker handling.
I'm assuming your looking for reasonably recent? - my V70 is a phase 1 2.5 5 pot turbo diesel, from cold it sounds like loose metal in a washing machine but above 2k rpm it changed quite remarkably to a lovely 5 pot burble which is really quite nice for a diesel, quiet it most certainly isn't although I do believe the later D5 variations are quite refined.
Let's hope so. I had a 2005 D5, and IMO the engine was the worst part of it. Sure, it was reliable, but instead of the claimed "power of a six, economy of a four", it rattled like a London taxi, and very much had the power of a 4 and the economy of a 6. It was one of the key reasons the car was sold.
Surprised to read that, I'd thought the D5 was a good lump, must say I'm very impressed with mine (wearing ear plugs mind you) it's been remapped and above 2k rpm really moves yet on a run it's proving remarkably frugal, it averaged 34mpg recently on a caravan towing trip up in the Peak District which really surprised me and commuting to & from work in getting low 40's.....
Try out a V70 or similar Volvo.
I have not found seats that feel more comfortable.
Granted I don't go around testing car seats but my friends 6 series (although Msport) are not as nice (in a sink into them sofa feeling).
I drive 100 miles a day in mine and last Friday hit about 200, plus the morning work drive and felt fine.
With regards to the engine my 11 plate D5 (D5244T10 - 205 PS - 420 Nm) goes well enough matched with the auto box, sport mode is quite amusing tbh for the size of the car.
I don't find the R-Design too harsh a ride but grab an SE or whatever they are called for the softer suspension.

Went for a high spec C5 at the end as the dealer was quite keen to sell the car (had been for sale for 4 months which seems quite a long time) and managed to get a new battery, brake pads and disks and 3 month mechanical insurance which i didn't have to use.
No complaints, drives exceptionally well on the motorway and returns 50mpg. Ergonomically leaves much to be desired with lots of switches in awkward places etc. Passed MOT without even a single advisory which was a bit of a surprise. Still early days but having done 10k it seems to have been a good choice in the absence of a reasonably priced Volvo.
