144hz or Feesync or G-Sync

Hi,

I'm in the market for a new monitor as my Dell U2312HM has decided to grow blurry green lines on one side of the screen.

Anyway my specs are:

i5 6600K, 16GB Ram, nVidia GTA 1060

I'd like naother 23/24 inch at 1080p

Playing a variety of games.

144hz interests me as I believe this makes an LCD as smooth as the old CRT used to be in terms of motion? Do i just go for this?

However, I hear good things about free sync and G-Sync.

few questions;

1. can I use freesync with my nvidia card?
2. if yes - do all features work?
3. is G-Sync worth the extra money

IF I do shell out and get a 1440p monitor - can my specs really handle that? will games run smooth enough? or will i need a GTX 1070 next year?

Thanks :)

any idea when that acer predator g-sync will be back in stock? seems OOS everywhere.

also the range of g-sync monitors seems tiny.

is a quality 144hz monitor not worth it then?

I have just bought the acer predator 27" 144hz 1080p gsync monitor and LOVE it,its my first high refresh rate and gsync monitor, all I can say is I havnt had one tear since gaming on this and everything feels silky smooth! gsync is amazing but it dosnt perform miracles,if you get a big drop from say 60fps to near 30fps you "may" experience a slight stutter but I expect you will always be way above that fps.

after trying it I don't think I could go back now,i wasn't sure at first but I really think gsync is very very good and worth the money

1) No. Freesync only works on ATI GPU's
2) Nope.
3) You have a Nvidia GPU that means you're looking at a gsync monitor. These cost more than the similar specced ATI freesync monitors. Try and get a 144hz g-sync monitor.

With a 1440p screen you may find you will have to upgrade earlier. I'm using a 1900x1200 24" and if I was looking at a 480/1060 that means dropping down slightly lower resolution as 24" seem to be 1080p.

Glad you like it!

One thing with gsync, to me I sat there for days and just "didn't notice it".

Then, it clicked in my head. You shouldn't "notice" it, it makes everything smooth and playing games feels like it should, regardless of fps. (For the general, obviously massive dips and under 30 you can see sync issues but damn, the other 90% of the time its amazing.

I honestly don't mind it being 1080 either, I can DSR up to whatever (4k in some games) with my 970. Generally play on 1440p but if them frames are too low i'll pop it to 1080 and it looks fine in all honesty.

It makes sub 60fps gaming bearable. before g-sync I could not play 30-45 fps gaming because the tearing would be so severe that I would get motion sickness and stop playing. With G-sync on, this feeling is removed. I would normally need V-sync to get this effect but then you get stuttering and severe mouse lag.

But frame rate is frame rate, and you will notice the dips and slowdown. It will feel like you're sluggish and floaty etc. Basically like playing on a console. playing 30fps feels like playing 30fps. People say "oh it makes 45 fps feel like 60fps" but no, for me and other sensitive people, it does not feel like 60fps.

People say oh ignore g-sync its a waste of money, just get a more powerful card etc, but sometimes games just are poorly optimised. Heavy CPU bound games such as GTA V, Starcraft 2, assassins creed and BF series will generate sub 60 fps dips regardless of your GPU horse power if youre using your old 3770k.

Its helping me immensely with dishonored 2 which at this point is bucking from 24 fps to 70 fps

It's a shame that Gsync is so much more expensive.

Cheapest 1440p 144hz free sync is £280

Cheapest 1440p 144hz Gsync is £660

Prices are better at 1080p but I still find it very poor that Gsync is expensive and not widely supported.

I would like a Gsync screen but they are not cost effective imho

This sort of tech shouldn't be propriety to each manufacturer.
Being tied to one gpu manufacturer by your monitor choice is very poor for the consumer.

Would you guys go with lower refresh and Gsync?
1080p and Gsync?
Or are you all using £600+ screens?

I wouldn't trade my G sync 27" 1440p display for anything. But if you don't wan to shell out that much money, just get yourself a 144Hz monitor with a low response time and input lag and play with Vsync off. You'll still get a decent experience and at 144Hz tearing is pretty minimal. You can use a Freesync display with Nvdia but the sync feature will not work without an AMD GPU.

The cheapest pretty decent 27" 1440p 144hz gsync monitor is the Dell S2716DG, it is a TN panel so not the best viewing angles and everything else that comes with it being TN panel.

If you want the "best" of everything then you'd have to look at getting the IPS ones, which are ASUS PG279Q and Acer XB271HU.

IMO it's not worth getting a 1080p gsync - you're virtually paying for another 1080p monitor just to get the gsync in there.

To answer your questions:
1. can I use freesync with my nvidia card? ---- No
2. if yes - do all features work? ---------------- N/A
3. is G-Sync worth the extra money ----------- Yes

Right ok.

To be honest I'd rather just stick with 1080p as it looks fine & I can max out settings.

I am looking to spend £250-£300 and want:

24inch
1080p
144hz

any recommendations? I'm not really fussed about G-Sync

Being tied to one gpu man

I agree. It's stupid. I would like to have considered Nvidia GPU but with the extra cost of g-sync that meant a ATI.

So either have a choice of saving money, or spending the same and getting a better card (or even crossfire) Or simply just changing the card sooner with the saving I've made.
