4K upgrade advice?

Hi Guys and Gals,

I'm looking to upgrade to a 4k monitor soon and I would like recommendations on a GPU upgrade if necessary.

Currently I game at 1080p but I am finding myself more inclined toward 4k. It is something I really want to do.

At the moment I am using a 980GTX Palit Superclocked. I am running it a default settings and a slightly reduced fan profile. I am willing to SLI.

PSU wattage isn't an issue and space aren't an issue either (900D).

Ideally I will add the gpu/s to my waterloop so I'll need a new radiator and a couple more fans but mainly I need advice on what could give me high settings at 4k.

I play a total range of games so aim for hardest hitters on FPS please.

If you have a 4k monitor recommendation then I'm also happy to listen

No budget set at this stage, however availability in Egypt can be a pain so most likely I will end up either importing or collecting from the UK soon.

1080 sli tbh mate who has it can max all games except a couple and maintain 60 fps.

2 x 1070s wont keep you above 60 in all titles.at 4k.

from somone who has 1440p 4K & 21:9 1440p

DONT buy 4K, you'll regret it
60hz is horrid speciallly at 4K

+ are you happy to upgrade your gpu every 6-9 months?

if not get 21:9 1440p or 2560x1440p\

if you are
wait for the 4K 120hz.

trust me ive put in around 2K in these monitors. im not ashamed to admit the 4K was a mistake

Agreed i just gotbrid of my 4k panel too much hassle and cost to actually get games good

4K can be VERY taxing! If you do go for it then definitely go for a 4k Gsync monitor, it will help a LOT with the low frames and also feel like a 'smoother' 60Hz experience (I have had the XB321HK which was pretty awesome).

Budget wise you can go pretty nuts, but if you get a Gsync screen then it'll help lots and you'll be able to keep your budget down a fair bit.

Myself I'd go for a 4k Gsync screen and a single 1080Ti once out, then you'll be able to play pretty much everything at Med-High settings. If you want to go nuts then add another for that total Maxed everything :)

If your budget is more realistic then go for another 980 (2nd hand) and put your funds into a Gsync screen and you'll max out a lot of things but some will be Med-High (which will still look damn good tbh).

The monitor is def where you should be looking for this. Hell even if it takes up all of your funds then go for it and run the single 980 on it for a little while til you can change or add another :)

Thanks for the feedback, I was wondering if I should replace my 1440p IPS 60hz with an 4K 60hz or get a another 1440p screen with freesync and 144hz and that's helped to make up my mind.

I have a lg 34" super wide monitor and even though I haven't tried a 4k monitor I am 100% confident I made the right choice that super wide is the way to go.

I've just remembered, since you considering 4k and SLI with water cooling I'm guessing you have plenty of money in the bank. You should wait and get the Dell UP3017Q - 4K, OLED, 120Hz. :D:D:D:D:D

This is def another option for you, a nice Asus or Acer UW monitor (I have the X34A, it's brilliant!)

980 SLi will be able to run it too without many issues with fps :)

To answer the OP regarding GPU options for 4k, IMO its really the Titan XP which can push 4k to good, stable, high settings fps right now. The second would be a single 1080, its capable but may havr to drop a few settings. The ultimate would be 1080 SLI, but that comes with the SLI problems and game support.

I came from a 1440p 60hz to a 1440hz 144/165hz and i cannot go back to 60hz. Even with the real state of 4k, its still 60hz, massive difference in smoothness.
I would go for 1440p 144/165hz route or a 21:9 3440x1440 just to avoid 60hz
