Morning,

I'm about to take the plunge to replace my 2.5 year old 14" Alienware with a 765m.

I think I've done myself an injustice and reviewed too many options! I need some advice on the questions running around my head:

1) I think I'm going to stick with 1080p as I would rather have 1080p and a higher frame rate than 4k and lower frame rate - especially in 6-12 months when even more demanding games come out.

2) Is G-Sync a must have option? Is G-Sync at 60hz better than no G-Sync and 120hz?

3) Is 16GB enough these days? I've seen a lot of laptops offering a 32GB option but i'm not sure if it is necessary.

4) Which CPU is the one to go for? The standard seems to be the i7-6700HQ but the slightly more expensive laptops have the i7-6820HK. Is there a noticeable difference worth the extra cost?

5) I've put thunderbolt 3 as a MUST HAVE option for future proofing. Are there any more must have options I may have missed?

6) Finally I'm leaning towards 15" over a 17" for around £2-2.2K. Are the heating issues massively increased with the 15" and a 1070 or is it negligible?

I've looked at the below laptops (and a few more I can't remember right now) and my mind has turned to mush.

15/17" MSI GT62VR 6RE
17" Aorus X7 V6-CF2
15" Aorus X5 V6 (Really sexy....no thunderbolt :( )
15/17" Alienwares

  1. I think you are right with 1080p, especially for smaller 13"/15" screens
  2. Would like to know this about G-Sync too, personally a better quality screen is preferable
  3. 16GB is loads! What is peak memory usage when gaming now, 4GB-5GB in use?
  4. The i7-6820HK can lead to some people suffering throttling issues, but it usually isn't that much more (£120+) to get and could offer useful futureproofing if the setup can handle the cooling. Always an option to limit the turbo feature too?
  5. Thunderbolt 3 is essential thats true, cannot believe there are good manufactures leaving this out (Aorus!) Multiple M2 bays is nice.
  6. If you are travelling regularly then 17" is for the dedicated only. Cooling is better but not terrible. Some people have reported throttling with the Alienware 15 R3 and it's 1070 but reviews seem to praise it's cooling so it's unclear.

I've been looking at much the same list but 15" size limit.
MIS - out due to customer service
Aorus - no Thunderbolt 3 support
Alienware - possible, but the 15" is pretty big
Razer - Blade is a possible, but limited support / customer service is an issue

Whats wrong with MSI customer service?

In summary:

MSI advertised a feature.
MSI reneged on said feature.
MSI presented an alternative at a huge cost increase over the original feature.
MSI has still no mention of this issue on it's own website (only on 3rd party forums).
MSI expect us to believe it takes over a month to get a reply from their HQ.
MSI USA rolled out a scheme with laughable inept maths.

This issue only affects those that bought that bought MSI top of the range GT series notebooks, but demonstrates how they treat customers when problems arise.

MSI hardware is fantastic, my GT72 is a great machine. It's such a pity about the level of customer care they provide.

Thats a real shame because they're great laptops that have now been tainted by this poor customer service!

Is anybody able to offer advice on the G-Sync/CPU?

If you go GTX 1070 @1080p G-Sync is almost irrelevant.

Almost all of the I7's in the last few years are much of a muchness. 6700HQ will be sufficient for gaming.

I'm nearly dead set on a MSI GT62VR 15.6"

It has 1080p (G-Sync) with a 1070, 16GB ram, 256SSD, 1TB HDD.

Roughly £1900~

be careful what i just read on a comments section on a you tube video . it has a warranty sticker 1 of the bottom screws and void if removed . why they do this i will never know it cant be user upgraded .

im all for the 17in version but if that warranty sticker is there then back to the drawing board and will look at the Aorus again .

I went for the MSI GT62VR :)

Should be here Wednesday

Im also going MSI but the 17in version as did look at other options (Octane III with 1080 and desktop cpu) but for £350 more i think i can cope with the MSI as its more than what i need for it to do ..

let me know how good your pack pack is . looks smart from what i can see .
