As per title looking to upgrade my Logitech Z5500 speaker setup with an av receiver and speaker package. I'll be connecting the amp to my graphics card via hdmi. Budget wise I'd like to keep it under 1K ;)

I saw this http://m.richersounds.com/#!/product/ONKY-HTS5805 and I've seen the Dolby Atmos option on Battlefield 1, wasn't sure if it was worthwhile getting an Atmos compatible receiver.

I don't know a great deal about Atmos, but I know it's not as simple as buying a surround set of speakers and set them as you would a 5.1 layout. I think either ceiling speakers used, or special speaker which fire the sound at the ceiling, or something like that.

After having a quick look, Atmos specific speakers look bloody expensive. KEF's Atmos speakers are £600 for a pair.

Ceiling speakers are likely much cheaper, but a lot harder to install.

Probably only worth considering if you intend to do it properly. Otherwise, just stick with tried and tested 5.1.

Unless you need small satellite package, I'd go for Q Acoustics 2000i 5.1 package. then spend the rest on a good receiver.

From what I've read Dolby Atmos needs additional speakers for the height channels. The package I linked had ceiling firing speakers on the front surround's, just not sure if it's a quality package.

The receiver is quite basic. If you've got up to £1k to spend, then if you do want Atmos, you can buy the speaker package separately for £400. Then buy a better Atmos capable receiver to go with them.

Whether it's worth going for such a speaker package just for Atmos over a better quality standard 5.1 package, such as the QA 2000i, I don't know.

I suppose that depends on how many games support Dolby Atmos. It may grow so that more and more support it, and such a system will have more use for gaming. If it's only a handful of games, then you may in the long run be better off with better quality standard 5.1 speaker set up.

That amp+speaker package is lame.

If you have the patience you'd be better off starting with a 2.0 setup then add as you can afford. You'll have a much better set up.

There's another thread here where we discussed a decent atmos amp to get (think it was a denon). I'd recommend buying seperately.

I've read a lot about HDMI handshake issues with Onkyo equipment recently so wouldn't recommend that amp.

I can however whole-heartedly recommend that if your going to buy a new amp now you get one with Atmos for future compatibility even if you ain't going to use the additional 'ceiling' speakers.

Love my Tannoy HTS-101 speakers - managed to get them from richer sounds a while back for only £250 - a set of them with a decent say £500 amp and you'll probably still have a better overall sound than that package. hth
