Is a 980ti really not going to cut it for 1440p anymore?

I've been having a few recent game releases play like arse at max settings 1440p, is the 980ti no longer going to cut it? I'm waiting for the 1080ti before upgrading.

Or should I just get a 1080 now?

Which games?

The last 3 'new' games I've installed have all had FPS drops and issues when running max, F1 2016, Dishonored 2 (even after the patch, having to run at high/medium, very high and ultra are just not possible for a smooth 60fps playback) and Planet Coaster.

I wouldnt think so. Dishonored has problems. BF1, titanfall etc should run above 100fps at ultra 1440p so its just those particular games. Also planet coaster could be a cpu bottleneck

A 1070 and 980Ti both trade blows but if you want max FPS, a 1080 is your only choice. Note, this has more to do with the crappy optimisation/cross-platform issue than anything else.

If you really want the best wait for 1080Ti. I am running a 1070 and even comparing the performance increase from it to a Titan X Pascal, I still see that that the pricing is going to be way off the mark.

Another option is to buy a second-hand 980Ti for SLI.

I popped one of my old 980Ti Hybrids into a PC I'm building for a friend last night, and tested Gears of War 4 and BF1 - both ran at around 80-90 FPS at 1440p, Ultra. This was at stock clocks.

Perhaps the games you're playing are just really poorly made?

A 1080 is only slightly less arse. IMO your choices are:

  • Another 980ti 2nd hand for £200-250, and go SLI.
  • Wait for 1080ti

Is SLI a wise choice these days? I used to back when I had 2 8800 GTX's under water. It was amazing.

I'm using a micro build, so small ATX case, it would get fairly warm in there. Mind you, I'm only using Noctuas that don't really have much pushing power.

from what Ive been hearing sli support has gotten substantially worse in the last year or so,

much like 3D vision, nvidia deemed SLI enthusiasts such a minute market that its not worth spending manpower promoting its implementation. a lot of fixes involve using existing profiles from different games. Even then there will be imperfect textures shadows or even negative performance.

I think its more trouble than its worth. also 1070 sli scaling I hear is not as good as previous gen.

I have a 3930K @ 4.4GHz and a 980Ti @ 1400Mhz and BF1, DOOM and The Division play very well at 2560x1440.

Dishonoured 2 doesn't play that well on most things to be honest.

I have a very overclocked bios flashed 980 GTX pretty much plays everything at 60 or above 2560x1440. Haven't tried Dishonoured 2 yet.

Waiting for the 1080's to come down in price and see what the TI is like, no point upgrading just yet - ref price

I find SLI to work really well, but I wouldn't consider it for a micro build.

I think if you buy a 1080 now you'll regret it when the 1080ti drops, and a 980ti is still very capable at 1440 unless you're running 21:9?

Honestly i think it's more the developers at fault than your hardware. Dishonored 2 has been singled out as a bad performer on PC at the moment.

Will he though? the 1080ti will certainly be in the £800-£1000 range which is a bit ridiculous.

A 980ti should still be capable of running 1440p. Maybe consider turning down a little bit of the settings to get desired fps.

I am here running a borrowed 980 from my brother since returning a 1080 FTW and i am getting 70-90 fps on BF1 Ultra on 1440p

Edit: IIRC a 1080 is around 10%-30% better than a 980ti depending on the model. So it should really more than capable

just turn down the settings or wait for patches.
dishonored 2 has a tonne of issues on pc version atm, its all over the internet.

980Ti should be fine for 1440p in theory.
