Bought an old BMW M3, ACTUALLY filled with regret

Cheers Housey I'll check it out.

Shall update you guys with what happens. And I'll make that euro trip thread at some point to remind me of good times with this M3 lol.

I've got a spare wheel in my shed if yours is giving you trouble?

Thought you were going to frame the wheel Vox ? Or make a coffee table out of it to save the memory?

This reminds me of a story my boss told me. His other half works for a dealer network and one day someone just completely forgot to tighten the wheel nuts up on one wheel after serving a car. So as the customer picked the car up and before he got to exit of the dealership it fell off causing him to hit a new car parked up...

Forget emails/phone calls - get into the dealership that have the car and set out what you want from them.

Be clear and concise with your request, polite as well. At the moment you don;t seem to be taking control of the situation but allowing BMW to dictate to you what's happening - change that around and take control.

Floated the idea of turning it into a bedside table, GF gave me the "why the hell do I put up with your ****" look :D I'll just do it one day and not tell her, then she won't be able to throw it out, right?!

Sorry to hear of your 'troubles' with BMW and especially the M3. As an e92 M3 owner since Sept 2012 I can tell you it is an exceptional car (especially when the wheels don't come off!) and even more so when you invest in a proper security system to protect it. If you end up keeping the car I strongly suggest a system from secure my car - trust me for more specific info if you wish.

Yes I know that is something BMW should have sorted ages ago etc etc but once you have the piece of mind that someone cannot just 'take it' it becomes a lot more enjoyable.

BMW, like Audi and VW no doubt employ complete numpties at the stealerships to 'change wheels' and replace stuff, although technically there should be a M-specialist dealing with any M car being worked on. They may even be called a BMW 'M' technician.

I would, as previously advised, go to BMW and request to speak to the manager/service manager. The invoice you were given for the work done should include a signature from the M-tech that worked on your car on that day, ask to speak to them and get a written statement from them. Explain the situation and explain that you will be taking the matter up the chain, BMW UK and so on. Fortunately I had a service pack on my car so never had any issues, but I hear BMW UK are very helpful and will usually do as much as they can to support you.

Unfortunately it will be very difficult to prove that the wheel came off because the stealership didn't tighten the wheel bolts, but there is enough evidence to suggest something wasn't done to 'BMW's' exacting standards - lets hope they are marginally higher than VW's!

Let us know how you get on. There are several M3 forums which might be useful to glean knowledge and perhaps speak to people in tricky situations such as yourself.

Damn, the feels when you see your own wheel go past you. I hope I don't ever have to experience this.

I had this towing a race car once with a mk 1(!) Ford Transit. Something felt a bit strange suddenly coming up to a roundabout and then we saw a wheel mount the pavement and go into the woods. It was a 2 wheel trailer and we'd just come off the M4 so I was pretty glad it happened where it did! My friend with me wasn't too pleased though, we couldn't find the wheel in the woods and it was a Rostyle wheel we'd borrowed from his dad's Mini after my trailer had a puncture.

Just make it heavy so she can't move it, won't be able to throw it out then :p

My dad took his GT to BMW for a 'pre-MOT' checkup. Turns out they only put 4 bolts back in one of the rear wheels. He was driving around for a few days before the MOT tester noticed :/

He went straight back and they fixed it and refunded him the MOT-check cost, red-faced :o

To be fair, the bolts are black and quite hard to see as the dish is quite big on the rear 20"s...

Whats the story here? Did it just get ripped off from the torque or something?

M3 + roundabout + rain + owned the car less than 2 hours + lack of talent = smashed wheel.

Just make it heavy so she can't move it, won't be able to throw it out then :p

Genius! If you have a short brunette girl knocking on your door looking really ticked off, I swear it's nothing to do with me and I definitely didn't tell her it was your idea...

If it really is as simple as the car doing less than 30miles since BMW took the wheel off and the failure was due to the wheel bolts not being done up correctly, why on earth have you waited over 2 months for something to happen!?

If this had taken more than 2 weeks I'd have been livid, but 2 months?

Hardly

It's been slammed sideways into something very solid; just look at the damage on the rim.

I had the same failure on a minilight wheel on one of my old (classic) mini's when driving to work. I hit a small lake of diesel on a corner and understeered across the road into the kerb. The next car around the bend a few seconds later did exactly the same thing but fortunately missed me by inches.

UPDATE

The Dealer Principle / MD is going to get back to me tomorrow morning it seems, he's out of the office this afternoon.

So all I can do is wait - again.

BMW UK said I needed to deal with this route first before they can intervene.
Insurance company still want to go down the legal route, but I guess I'll see how tomorrow goes, as the 'legal route' will likely take ages.

*sighs*

Genuinely wish I never bought this M3 now :(
