Hello all

Does anyone know if i can cover these downlighters with loft insulation? They say fire-rated? (LED's are fitted in all)

Thanks in advance!

I have downlighters with LED bulbs covered in insulation in the loft.

The only reason for needing fire-hoods, that I recall, relates to a) retaining the integrity of your ceiling in the even of a fire (bit like a fire door) but also b) because halogens emit bucketloads of heat (80% of energy?) so putting a fire source directly next to them is stupid.

Have had mine in for 5 years.

It'll be fine as you're using leds, i do the same in mine. A 5 watt LED emits nexts to nothing (ok 10% :p ) compared to a 50 watt halogen

No, they need free air for the heat from the drivers to dissipate.

Cut down some 4" soil pipe, place it around the fitting and then run the insulation up to that.

This or something similar is what should be done, with LED's you will probably get away with the insulation straight over the top but that is a big probably to risk!

This is what the builders have done to mine. My loft has little chimneys scattered everywhere. Wondered what they were for until I got back down and looked up.
