Would you buy a motherboard off Ebay?

I've bought loads of computer stuff off Ebay and had to send back very few things things. In the case of the RIVE I bought that had a bent pin, I noted before hand that she lived in the same town and in the end she lived a few hundreds yards off my normal commute so no hassle whatsoever.

There are two things to be do when buying a motherboard from Ebay

1. Check that it comes with the CPU cover. If it doesn't come with the CPU cover there a much greater chance of it having bent pins. If it doesn't come with a CPU cover then you must...

2. Ask for a good picture of the CPU socket. Normally a good and honest Ebayer will supply you with this so you can check before purchasing.

I didn't want to create another thread got similar question, i am about to purchase motherboard from Ocuk - B grade.Anyone got experience with B grade products?

yes, and mine is positive. I bought a monitor B grade. box was damaged, but otherwise no problem. You can try asking in the customer service forum why it is reduced, though they may not know. Either way you are protected by the usual return period (30 days). Also, despite what they say about the 90 days warranty, you also get whatever is remaining of the manufacturers warranty.

I bought my old Asus Sabretooth 990fx board off eBay. Everything worked and the board is still in use 3 years later in my nieces PC. I have only ever had to return one thing I bought off eBay and it was down to bad packaging and a rough as **** courier.

Ebay is even safer to buy from than the MM!

I bought an Asus RIVE and it arrived with a pin bent. It was simple and straight forward to get my money back. I had no concerns whether I would get my money back and I did. You are generally covered by the The Consumer Contracts Regulations when buying from Ebay.

I once bought a 2600k CPU from Cupra on the MM and he stated that it past an Intel burn at 5.2Ghz. I've been overclocking every CPU since Celeron 300a days and tried the CPU in 3 different motherboards, including the same one he said he did it on and I couldn't get it past 4.5Ghz. (He'd most likely just sent me a different 2600k) When I tried to get my money back even with the help of a mod offering to serve as escrow he wouldn't refund me. The guy I eventually sold it to could not get it past 4.5Ghz either. At least on Ebay if something is not as described then it's pretty painless to get a refund and they also pay for return postage.

I honestly wouldn't even consider buying a cpu on the basis of extreme end clocks unless I also got the motherboard and memory used for that overclock plus all bios settings.

Otherwise you're not actually getting a known working combination.

Are you saying a cpu gets accustomed to the motherboard it was on?

bought (and sold) loads of things from ebay,mb,cpu, graphics cards, never had one faulty touch wood..i did buy a refurbished mb from a shop once and it was faulty..luck of the draw sometimes but you should be covered by paypal if it goes **** up.

always check their feedback first.

I have bought second hand bits off EBay in the past.
The last board I bought, which was over three years back now was the Sabertooth P67. It was going to be the base of my new system at the time. I had no other bits to fit that board so when I got it I just left it in the box.
When I got a chip to fit, about three to four months later I got a right shock. All the pins and I mean all were squashed. I had bought a right lemon.
After many weeks of back and forth contacting eBay and trying to contact the seller I finally gave up, counted my losses and moved on.
I went to a proper shop and bought the Sabertooth Z77, which I still run to this day.
Which shop ? From OCUK of course and from that day I have never bought my PC bits from anywhere else.

I kept the P67 until a few weeks back actually just to remind me of how stupid I can be.

As for buying owt from eBay, the only thing I get is strimmer line for my Black n Decker.

I would say if you can afford to loose £40, take the gamble. Make sure as soon at it arrives to check it over with a very keen eye on the pins.

TBF if you buy something then you want to test it within a week to make sure it is fine, you could also of check the pins without even needing a CPU to look at it with. I agree that Ebay is full of scum but sometimes it is worth it and if the seller is a shop with over 99.5% feedback you should be good.

Hey There,

I have a mobo p8p67 le with the 2500k running, I may be looking to upgrade to a socket 1151 in the close future. Ill check what ram I have but I think it has 12gb ram which I will sell with it and case.

There's no catch other than owning this baby for the last 4 years, and because I own a r9 390x strix I think it's time to upgrade to an i7 and go for DDR 4 ram. Also getting a Thermaltake P3 case the mobo isn't exactly eye candy but does the job :D.

The CPU has never let me down and will slap on my aftermarket cooler which is brand new, selling round Christmas time and more than happy for you to come and check it out.

quite surprised that the i5 2500k are still going for £100-£200.

What price range you looking for?

Also forgot there's a Samsung bluray dvd rw drive that will go with the case.

While getting a motherboard and CPU together will increase your chances of getting the same clocks, you would never get a 700Mhz variance using the same exactly the same model motherboard and in my case an even better overclocking motherboard.

After that incident I purchased another 2600k but got a little more evidence like screen shots during stress tests. This one was slated to do 4.8Ghz at 1.32v. This proved to be the case and I ran it at 5Ghz at 1.38v. (I sold this CPU and motherboard together which reinforces your point)

2500k more like £50 pal
Definitely so. I purchased three 2500k's this year, all for under £50

I would definitely recommend getting things from Ebay, especially if you upgrade frequently. If you're careful about who you buy from, then with the moneyback guarantee, there should be no problem.

However, 1155 is a bit of a tricky platform to get into. It's very popular second hand because, after Sandy Bridge, Intel CPUs stopped taking big steps in performance. Consequently, the best parts for that platform (e.g. Z77 motherboards, P67 motherboards, i7 2X00K and 3770K chips) are still quite expensive. Depending on what performance you want to achieve, the best bang for buck is probably 1156, where you can get an i7 + decent motherboard for £100 (about half what an i7 + decent motherboard will cost you on 1155).

It's generally safe but there are so many components on a motherboard that you may not discover a fault until after several years. For example, If a board has six sata ports, four working and two faulty, and you only use two of the working ports, then you may not discover the defective ports, if ever, until you eventually use them.

I bought an X99 board for £100 as a spare as the auction ended just after midnight and then spotted a Xeon ES 2630 v5 (8 cores) for £120 and impulse bought that then had a working board + CPU so thought about what to do with it. The RX 480 got released just then so I thought I'd give coin mining a go so bought 4 x 4(8) GB Sapphire GPUs, though they were new of course and it's been hashing 24/7 for six months since!

I still had my old i5 3570K + Z77 board as well so despite the silly 2nd hand prices on Ebay I kept them and built another mining rig with that.

I hadn't planned to do any of that it was just that lucky X99 purchase that sparked it all.

I've purchased 2 used MB on ebay. Both had pins broken in the socket. Got my money back both times. So I then purchased a new MB on ebay, still using it now.
