I work with young people today...and I have progressively seen a decline in enthusiasm for anything other than self promotion and narcissism.

They are victim to the cost of of free...and are mere puppets to capitalism.

Technology is not freeing creativity...it's merely creating spoilt brats...

I tend to agree with the OP. When young I was always the geek, loving technology since the days of the 1980's micro computers., while everyone around me lived a more normal life. But now I am much older I tend to shy away from technology while everyone else is glued to facebook and other social media. I can see how it can become an addiction and stop people froomlearning real social skills.

I am sure people who had children who grew up in the 60's and 70's thought rock and roll were the devil who ruin young people's minds and turning them into rebellious freaks.

Well if the new Trump thread in SC is anything to go by... ;)

Maybe so, but listening to a particular style music didn't lead to the rise of the idiot generation, with all the intelligence and attention span of an oxygen starved goldfish. You only have to take part in pub quizzes to see just how dense the current breed of millennials are. And I'm not talking about the divs from the local sink-estate here, I mean University students and graduates who don't have the slightest concept of general knowledge.

But is thst because its now 20 year out of date general knowledge?

Is say pop music from 2 decades before they were born and not really listened to by thier generation general knowledge for them?

Also you fotta remmeber youve got a few decades on them in twrms of knowledge gathering

I've only just turned 30 and agree with the OP.

But for me the issue is more with social media, I've had some of the younger lads at work say 'oh my opinion is this' and when questioned as to where they found the information to make a decision 'oh I saw it in a post on facebook'. Something that turns out to be completely untrue.

The young adults of today (and I reckon that covers anyone from 14-25 these days) seem to live their lives through social media. I went on a works event in september with the older boys (45+, was the second youngest there) and it was refreshing going for a meal out and everyones phones staying in their pockets rather than taking pictures of food.

I don't want to come across as old (at 30 ffs, that's how bad it's got) but one of my rules when we go out is no phones at the table, I'll quite happily put it across bluntly to people who do it, it really ****ing annoys me. If your facebook upload can't wait 10 mins the **** off out of my sight.

Two examples. I'm talking about university students and graduates not knowing what the Battle of Hastings was or even, and this is the kicker, where it took place. :p

Another didn't even know that the Earth was the third planet from the Sun and that the closest star to Earth is the Sun, and no they didn't answer Alpha Centauri either. They didn't know that the Sun is a star. :p

And youd have probbaly failed to answer questions relating to thier degree study.

Honestly other than pub quizzes how is knowing the dates of centuries old battles any indicstor of inteligence or of any use.

Especislly when they can google and find the correct answer in seconds.

I usualy take my phone out as with the case its uncomfortable in the pocket sat down.

Tbh though be less boring and people will not need to use thier phones

Mate, I'm 28 and completely agree with you. It's amazing how people have seemingly lost the ability to have a conversation these days. It genuinely depresses me sitting at the table and looking around at others in your group staring down at their phones.

It's actually nice to go home as most of my friends are of the same mindset. We are all too busy chatting to even think about our phones.

I actually agree, I know some will see this as "old people moaning about dem kids on their lawn!"

But the truth is I started using the internet when I was roughly 15 I think, first online game I played was age of empires one.

So i've been using the internet nearly daily for a verrrry long time and i'm now 28. Since social media became a thing it's quite clear it's only accentuated the worst traits of humanity.

I think it'll probably get worse too. The internet is AMAZING but at the same time it promotes some toxic mindsets. I'm really glad I didn't go through school when facebook instagram etc was a thing.

So essentially this thread is "ffs i turned to texhnology and the internet because i sucked at socialising and now everyone is usuing technology and the internet to socialise and I'm still left out"

I'm 40 I love tech & use social media, but I generally keep my phone in my pocket as i find it ignorant to use it when around others.

Young ones today are never off their phones, my two Teen Nieces are a prime example never off Facebook, Instagram ect they even sit and chat on iMessenger to each other when they in the same room sometimes. :/

They where both bought bikes a couple of years ago for Christmas, & they never been used they just sit at my parent home in the shed, because kids today don't want bikes they want iPads & iPhones ect.

Same goes for work at break the younger adults will just spend all their time on their phones and not speak to anybody much.
