The internet has ruined the youth.

No different from rock and roll, Television, the rave days, now the Internet with social media. It be something else in a few years time...... life goes on.

Maybe so, but listening to a particular style music didn't lead to the rise of the idiot generation, with all the intelligence and attention span of an oxygen starved goldfish. You only have to take part in pub quizzes to see just how dense the current breed of millennials are. And I'm not talking about the divs from the local sink-estate here, I mean University students and graduates who don't have the slightest concept of general knowledge.

Sorry but pub quizzes are not a good example of that at all. Even "general knowledge" in a quiz can vary so much from quiz to quiz depending on where the quiz is being taken and the general demographic a quiz is aimed at.

A group of millenials doing a pub quiz in a pub generally frequented by 50 year olds is going to struggle when they are asked questions about 80s footballers, but at the same time that winning team is going to struggle at a pub quiz in a student town.

Two examples. I'm talking about university students and graduates not knowing what the Battle of Hastings was or even, and this is the kicker, where it took place. :p

Another didn't even know that the Earth was the third planet from the Sun and that the closest star to Earth is the Sun, and no they didn't answer Alpha Centauri either. They didn't know that the Sun is a star. :p

I know plenty of old people tha couldn't answer those simple questions as well... :p

The elderly ruined the future, don't complain in what was complicit plunder.

The elderly who lived through multiple wars, a few deep recessions and stuff like the miners strike and cold war?

The same elderly who lived in houses with no central heating, outside bogs and insulation hadn't been invented? The same elderly who had to send their kids to school to get a shower?

The same elderly who lived through times where having multiple jobs was the norm in order to get by?

The same elderly who have seen double digit interest and inflation rates?

The same elderly who used to be able to work together in a community to get stuff done instead of whining about how little others do for them on the internet?

The same elderly who had to deal with the power getting switched off because there wasn't enough to go around?

Yeah, generation ********* need to quit with the whining on twitter about how hard done to they are and realise that they are the most privileged generation ever.

You had it easy compared to the people in the 19th century... ;)

And they had it easy compared to those in the 18th century, and the 17th century... you *********. ;)

Unfortunately past generations have generally caused issues for newer generations, and newer generations are seen as "**********" by prefiois generations. You think you're special or something?

I love the technology around today, but i can't help but feel a lot of it is being misused by the youth of today. The internet and social media are a breeding ground for cyber bullies and antisocial behavior.

Todays kids are self entitled spoilt little brats and technology has a big part to play in that.

I've mentioned this elsewhere before but I had a really odd experience when I went on a skydiving course. It was myself and a bunch of freshers from bath university on a day trip (from their club). I was 27 at the time and as I was doing it by myself (my skydiving chums were already 1337).

Sure enough they were mostly pleasant by my god did they use their phones a lot. They weren't all friends and they hadn't met each other before, but rather than opt to get on they all seemed to take refuge in their phones and deliberately avoid making chums. I am particularly good with finding a way to get on with people (although I do have my foes) but I'd never seen anything like this before. I found it extremely weird, particularly because the age gap is only 9 years.

They were also 'intelligent' as evidenced from their uni - so their collective parenting couldn't have been awful... surely?

I work with young people today...and I have progressively seen a decline in enthusiasm for anything other than self promotion and narcissism.

They are victim to the cost of of free...and are mere puppets to capitalism.

Technology is not freeing creativity...it's merely creating spoilt brats...

You work with a bunch of prats then, most of the youngsters I work with are excellent hard working guys who really aspire to being successful.

Today's ********** haven't seen anything compared to events from the past mate, they are too busy complaining that the school sauna isn't big enough or that no one will buy them the latest iPhone.

And I'm sure your grandparents said the same about your generation.

Things change, things move and on older generations feel alienated by the changing world. Many end up harking back to the good old days, even though they weren't better in reality, just the haze of time made them appear so.

I'm sure us millenials will be making these same speeches in 50 years time. "I remember the days where you had to walk to the shops, rather than teleport, and you had to use electronic devices to access data! You young (insert generational word equivalent to **********) have it easy".

Nonsense, they paid for it and built it.

.

No they borrowed for it and expect thier kids to pay for it

Rhey are however the first generation in centuries to be worse off than thier parents

Meh rbh it reaches a point where would you rather work at pointless small talk with strangers or have a meaningful chat with your best mates

The elderly who lived through multiple wars, a few deep recessions and stuff like the miners strike and cold war?

Err which wars are these?

As you realise for the average millennial they have been at war for over 50% of thier lives.

Milenials have as a propotion lived throuhh far more war than the elderly

You only just worked that out :D

Considering they were joining a club to skydive with others regularly you would have thought they would have made more of an effort. Besides, 'small talk' is an important social skill with acquaintances and colleagues... and for making new best friends.

I was bored out of my skull as a teenager.... I wish I'd had the same ability to contact my friends as easily as the kids these days.

I could write for days about this I'm quite certain. And a few other posters who also work with teens/young adults.

The narcissistic thing is something myself and colleagues have discussed, but more delicately as either selfish or self absorbed.

I enjoy photography for example and have many a decent snap. If my learners go somewhere that I consider interesting I often ask if they have any pictures. The pictures they show have their head taking up 1/3-1/2 of the image pulling some muppetful face. Or girls usually sticking their tongue out with an arm cutting up the intended target.

Slaves to capitalism is 100% accurate. They need all the latest gizmos and many wont settle for 2nd best. That is a major difference with an average teen from now vs my generation. My phone cost me £116.00, yet kids are strolling round with often nearly £1,000 worth of technology with them.

My generation was classed as a consumer. Within the last 3yrs are the super consumers. Corporations must be laughing all the way to the bank

Because social media fuels insecurity and jealousy for many people who as a result constantly cry for relevancy in order to get attention.
