Dehydrators worth while?

Hi All,

With xmas approaching I'm trying to find bits to add to the list for my missus and as she doesn't mind a kitchen gadget I wondered about dehydrators as she's partial to the odd dried snack (apples/beetroot etc).

Are these things worth the effort or just a huge faff with no difference in quality from just picking up a packet of whatever nibble?

Thanks.

Not a big difference to just buying the dehydrated fruits for most things, but it works out massively cheaper and you can also experiment making fruit pastes or drying tomatoes etc.

Also note some fruits will come out very different to what you buy, because commercial dried fruit is often freeze dried. Strawberries for example will be thin very chewy chips with intense flavor. bananas go to a gooey chewy brown treat rather than a hard chip.

only if you use it, and unless you want to make dehydrated meals for hiking, or have a big jerky addiction, then i would say it'll almost certainly sit in the cupboard unused.

Now the jerky thing appeals to myself, but do the units which do fruit drying also cater for meats?

I use mine mainly for jerky, but also like to dry mushrooms, intensifies the flavour and last a load longer. Courgette crisps are great too, as are dried pickle slices, a yummy easily transportable snack :)

Which dehydrator do you have?

I've got the 'Andrew James Rectangular Digital Food Dehydrator'. Paid about £40 on a popular web site hat is possibly based in a rainforest.

Used it loads and have no complaints. I do however run it in the garage so the noise doesn't bother anyone.

I've got the same one and really rate it. I use it most weekends to make jerky!

I've got the same one, and I haven't used it in months! Anyone got any decent recipes for some motivation?

You mean Amazon?

Just make one, box and a bulb. Been making jerky using that for years. You can even add a fan if you want to dry even slower.

Dried some sliced portobello shrooms last night to go this evening's pizza. Much more flavour, maybe because I can put nearly a whole box on and as there's no water left in them, pizza doesn't go soggy :)

Why didn't I think to do that?! I love portobellos but avoid them on pizzas as they make it go too soggy.
