With Brexit looming, forecasts predicting slower growth and higher borrowing don’t expect anything but caution from the Chancellor.

Expected:

  • Fuel duty freeze.
  • Cuts to air passenger duty.
  • Increase in personal allowance.
  • Childcare subsidies.
  • National living wage increase.
  • Reduction on the rate which benefits are withdrawn.
  • Ban on pension cold calling.
  • End to salary sacrifice.
  • Ban on letting agents fees to tenants.
  • Cuts to Universal Credits.
  • £1.4 billion in affordable housing.
  • Investment in roads and R&D

Autumn Statement due to be presented to parliament at 12:30 and will be live here:

Also investment in 5G internet etc.

****** me off so much. Heard them talking about it on the radio and about a billion being invested to get 300Mb speeds to 12 million households. What about the millions of households still stuck with less than 4Mb speeds? After all if you have 100 or 200Mb speed, will 300 really make much difference?

Heard a restaurant/bar owner on complaining about his slow internet speed as it meant that once two of his his customers were streaming movies, it was maxxed out.

Grinds my goat.

Lets get 99% of the country up to reasonable internet speeds of at least 30Mb before we worry about increasing those on 200 to 300 and the government to give money towards it

I'm sure there are some parts of the UK who are still stuck on 56K due to their location. Shocked they have been ignored even in 2016 when everything moving to the digital world.

if the speeds where you live are terrible,
Why don't you move area?

Because I enjoy the countryside etc.

Doesnt mean to say we should be forgotten about and have to live with substandard internet.

Again, why is bringing 300Mb internet to areas which already have 200Mb so important?

Money spent on bringing the speed up across the country would be much more beneficial

Yay better speeds and more bandwidth!

Shame we won't be able to make use of any of it because it'll all be blocked by the Great British Firewall ™

Putting masts for 5g up is a lot cheaper than digging trenches to lay cables - and in many cases the masts are already there from 2g and 3g rollouts. The cost of fibre rollout is prohibitive for sparsely populated areas. If you live in the countryside and want internet access from this century, your best efforts are invested in persuading local nimbys to stfu.

This.

It took over a year for Openreach to install FTTP in my village. To get permission to partially close roads etc takes forever, it's such a bureaucratic process.

Funny that, yet to build a high speed railway they can seemingly do what they want, shame they don't put the same resources into a digital infrastructure.

No more letting agent fees to tenants is a great move.

Who do you think they will apply to though? And you know the tennant will end up paying anyway.

whats so offensive about salary sacrifice that it's getting the chop ? surely that is just further limiting people's options when it comes to workplace pensions etc ?

Cos it's easier

And only short term. The representative got quizzed as to why it made sense to spend up to a billion on upgrading 200mb to 300Mb when it was just a temporary thing until the next thing comes online which superceeds it with massive faster speeds.

the 5g investment I agree with but the one billion for upgrading internet speeds to 300Mb for just 2 million homes is madness.

Its £400 per home. If those people on 200Mb internet want 300Mb speed why not let them pay the £400 cost? I would gladly pay £400 for 300Mb but I dont even get the option.

Really happy about letting agents fees being banned. Great work by Shelter and other groups. With that and Khan's announcement to freeze fares until 2020 there will be a lot of happy Londoners.

Why would they get rid of salary sacrifice?! It makes putting money into a pension much more attractive.

Apparently it's the putting of salary into benefits such as gym memberships, health schemes, etc, something which has grown by a third in five years so is costing in lost income tax and national insurance contributions.
