Hello guys, wondering if you could help me, I've decided sod it and I'm going all out on a brand new laptop on a buy now pay later plan no interest rate and I can pay it off over 9 months, This laptop has to last at least 4 years as though I like to keep my main rig up to date my laptop I like to last. Sadly my Clevo p170EM GTX 680M even with custom Vbios is getting old now.

Anyway I've decided I want the MSI GT73VR as it looks the dogs ******** however I have a dilemma, I can get a GTX 1080 based System for not a whole lot more than a GTX 1070 Model though the 1070 is better kitted out in general.

GTX 1070 based system specs:
17.3” 120Hz 1920x1080
i7 6820HK
NVIDIA GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5
512GB (2x 256GB SuperRAID) SSD's
1TB 7200RPM HDD
32GB DDR4
£2399.99 (Competitors price, OCUK is £100 cheaper though don't do interest free pay over 9 months plan. Or do they?)

GTX 1080 based laptop:
17.3” 120Hz 1920x1080
i7 6700HQ
NVIDIA GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5
256Gb M.2 SSD
1TB 7200RPM HDD
16GB 2133MHz DDR4
£2499.99

So as you can see the 1070 cased laptop has more Ram, bigger SSD and a better CPU overall, or do I get the weaker CPU less RAM and smaller SSD with a GTX 1080 for £100 more? I could get the same kit as the 1070 model laptop with a 1080 though it's like £2800 which I won't pay for a laptop.
sorry for the long post but out of those 2 laptops what would you choose? Thank you! :)

I would go for the 1070 equipped laptop all day over the 1080 and here are my reasons;

- 1070 is more than capable enough when gaming at FHD
- 1070 will run cooler than the 1080
- 6820HK is a better CPU
- More RAM
- Larger SSD and RAID0
- 1070 GPU will consume less power

I was in the same boat as you not so long ago and ended up buying a GTX1080 Clevo chassis. I regretted this decision, ended up selling that machine and am now using the MSI GT73VR-6RE with a GTX1070. I am kicking myself that I didnt get the MSI in the first place, disregarding raw performance, this thing is in a different league.

Hope that helps.

I appreciate your response mate! I've been looking online and for some reason the temps look worse on a GT73VR than a GT72VR? as I'll be using headphones when playing games on it I'll have the funs full speed unless I'm playing a non demanding game. plus I've got a coolermaster laptop cooling stand. With max fans can you confirm your temps for me please pal? Also another thing with the 6820hk it can be undervolted which is what I'll be doing save the power usage and heat (y)

Honestly I don't think you'll need to undervolt or game with fans on full chat.

After hours of Battlefield 1 running turbo mode/stock fan profile GPU is 65 and CPU is 80.

If you are really interested in temps at full fan speed then I will run a quick firestrike bench for you.

If you wouldn't mind please pal as GT72 was getting in the mid 60s for the gpu and mid 50's on the cpu on a youtube channel I've been watching. Cheers mate appreciate it! :)

Ok test finished.

Turbo mode activated so CPU @ 4.0GHZ and a +100/+200 MHZ OC applied to GPU.

I appreciate the at jeers pal! Fantastic temps on the 1070 I wonder what over clocking it is like have you tried or?

I am constantly running the laptop in turbo mode.

This applies a default overclock to the CPU raising the multiplier to 40, resulting in 4.0GHZ core speed. The GPU core is raised by +100 MHZ and memory by +200 MHZ.

I don't really feel the need to overclock any further but there is definitely head room. I did try increasing the CPU to 4.1GHZ and it ran completely fin still returning good core temps.

I'm running at 1070 with no overclocker and a 6700HQ, before Microsoft screwed up my laptop I was hitting MAX temp of 68oc while running 3DMark/Total war etc on the 1070. Usually stayed around low 60s

Damien I only hit 11005 in Fire Strike

Have you got the laptop running "turbo" mode in the dragon control centre?

I'm not sure if the 6700HQ is overclockable but you should get a bump out of the GPU.

No i haven't seen turbo mode. I will do various benchmarks tonight so we can get them added to the official thread.

To the OP I would go for a 1070 for the reasons stated above. The cost to performance ratio is much better than the 1080. Not only that but at the moment there are quite a few reports of the 1080 overheating and actually clocking to a worse performance than the 1070!!

Anyone with a 1080 comment on the post above, I thinking of getting the 1080 spec of the op's 1070 version but if it's right I will go 1070 also

After watching videos of the GT72 I might just go for that as I'll save £600 or so and I've seen the gt72 hitting some cracking temps!
