Hi there, I was under the impression that x4, x8, x16 are all different physical sizes, in accordance with this picture.

However, I have ordered a cheap-ish GPU for a x8 slot, it was advertised as x8 but is actually full-length and would fit in a x16 slot as above - and therefore doesn't fit the x8 slot on my motherboard

Am I right or wrong here? :p
Thanks.

If you look at the x8 slot from underneath the motherboard you'll see that only half the slot is wired up. IOW it's electrically x8 but physically x16.

If I'm misreading you and you have a physical x8 slot on your motherboard, it should be open at the end so the x16 connector on the GPU will overhang the end of the slot.

I'll take a pic to explain it better :) 2mins

So: That's an "x8" slot on the motherboard apparently.

I've never seen an x8 graphics card - 99% are all physically a 16x connector, with a few specialist 1x cards available.

That card is advertised a bit misleadingly, as it probably only uses 8x lanes, but physically the connector is still a 16x.

In theory you can cut the end of the x8 slot (e.g. with a dremel), to leave the slot open ended and it will work fine.
