Hi,

I'm buying a new car in December, probably on the 1st. I want to tax it on the first so I get the whole month of December and obviously the person selling wants to get the money back for the month of December.

What are the options and the best way to do it?

There is no way to satisfy both of you.

The tax automatically expires when you change the keeper - if you do it before 1st December, he gets his full month of December back and you have to pay for November. If you do it on or after the 1st he loses the December month and you get the full month....

Can the person SORN it now and that means they get the December back and I could tax it on the 1st? Would that complicate matters regarding the V5?

If the seller is paying by DD he could just cancel that? I've done that before with no repercussions. DVLA shouldn't care as the VED doesn't even miss a day or anything.

Probably terrible advice though.

Can't you do a thing where you pay for the last week of the month?
I did something similar (somehow) when I bought one of my cars in the latter half of november. I'm not sure how or when it was arranged.

What VED band is the car in and what is the car worth ? Surely 1 months' duty is 10 to 20 quid (or am I being a thicko ?). Seems like a lot of fuss over not very much money.

I can empathise with the notion of not handing over a penny more to the DVLA than needed though.

There's no hassle way free of pleasing both of you, to be honest.

One of you is going to have to take the hit (and if you pull out now, he'll still have to tax it for DEC)

well there is a hassle free way as has already been pointed out in this thread . The current owner declares a sorn in November then the new owner taxes it when he buys it in December.

Unless you class filling in two numbers and hitting ok too much hassle.

Provided it isn't kept on a road..

Genuine question would it actually matter?

The system would show the original owner had taxed the vehicle up to the end of November. It would then show that the new owner taxed the vehicle from the 1st December. I can't imagine the system is capable of showing a gap that is only a few hours in length. Does the system even get updated that quickly???

It was SORN yesterday in prep for me picking it up next week so it'd need to be kept off the road.

The point was a SORN can be done in a day and it's very unlikely you'll be found out if it's on the road for that night.

You would also have to be very unlucky in having an enforcement vehicle drive past.

I had the VED missing on a brand new car because the dealer messed up. Took a few months before I finally got caught for a fine (enforcement vehicle drove past at like 3am I think) and then got the dealer to pay the fine and buy the VED.

Surely he just cancels his tax from 30th November Midnight and you tax it from then on, ie start tax on 1st December 00:01.

Instead of starting a new thread I'll ask in here. Both my cars tax/VED are due to expire on 1st Dec. Do you get reminder letters anymore? I tried to tax them tonight but I can't, can you not do it in advance anymore? What if I need to drive it on the first but haven't got time to tax it before then?
