Girlfriend has a fiesta and it needed its 3rd year service. She has only has car 10 months. I went on the main Ford website to find the cheapest prices at the local dealers.

The cheapest wasn't the closest and the next best was 10 miles away so no problem. The closest dealer didn't have prices so we emailed them saying what were the cheapest prices we had found and could they match or better them.

They email back a price of £242.10 and £30 for mot and we except and book it. The cheapest at the time was £230 and £30 mot on ford's website.

Had the mot and service today and no problems except when she had to pay. They have added vat on the quotes prices so had to pay £290.52 for the service.

Tldr: Would you expect Busseys a main Ford dealer to quote services prices with or with out vat?

I would expect them to quote the price you pay. When I have booked my car in at Ford for a service they have quoted a price and that is what I paid.

Funnily enough just had a call from Gates who we bought the car from to tell me the car needs an mot.

Told them the situation and they said they would only quote prices including vat but can't comment on other dealers practices. Gates were £249 Inc vat.

Seem like some emails are needing to be sent.

I've had garages quote both, just seems to depend on the garage. Although the ex vat ones have always stated that.

I believe if a price is ex vat it has to state that is the case.

Perhaps it was just an offer but when my missus had her mk3 Focus serviced at ford it was a fixed price of £200inc vat for a full service which included a years roadside.

Oh it annoys me no end.

When i had some painting done on my car they guy quoted prices...

It was all fine until when it came to pay and i was asked for £170 more than advertised!

I wasn't best pleased.

Always get a price quote on paper and if it says nothing about VAT then its an inc price, if they try and argue it then you have proof. All non vat included quotes have to say so...

Or just always ask if thats the inc vat price. I hate it when places do this when they know damn well you are a normal non business customer! they do it just to sound cheap and expect you to just pay when the work is done and not kick up a fuss.

If as a non business customer i ask for a quote then it is clearly inc VAT you muppets. If i wanted a non vat quote i would ask for one.

They SHOULD ask you at the time of the quote, but that would involve common sense which seems to be severely lacking at the moment in dealerships it seems.

The quote was emailed. This is what they wrote:

No problem, we would be able to do the 3 year (major) service for £242.10, and £30.00 for the MOT. This includes the 12 month (or 12,500 miles whichever comes soonest) roadside assistance package including homestart and of course your vehicle would be worked on by Ford trained technicians.

We would definitely be able to get you in before the 13.12.16, thank you for your new address details, I have updated these on the system.

Please let me know if you would like to keep the booking that I have made or if you require it to be amended/cancelled.

Job done, no mention of VAT therefore that's the inc price and what you'll be giving them whether they like it or not.

No terms and conditions attached? small print saying all prices quoted are ex vat? I bet you will find that all quotes are subject to terms and conditions and it will state it there, thats the usual case with these things.

Yes she did pay as she needed the car to do visits for work. The dealer is 2 minutes walk down the road so didn't have a courtesy car as she worked in the office until the car was ready.

The email came with no terms and conditions at all. She went through the online booking form process hoping to eventually get a price before commiting but no price was given and then a date was booked. The rest was done after the dealer contacted her by emailing her next day that the date was booked and she had to email back asking how much it would cost.

I'll sort it out with her tonight when I get home. Just wanted opinions on whether this was the usual thing or not before I go for blood in the dealership.

I have a garage I have used for years for my normal servicing and would usually use him but as the car is under 3 years old and still under warranty I thought it would be best to go through the dealer. So if any broken bits are covered under warranty it's in the right place to get it sorted.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

I have always been quoted prices including VAT for main dealer services and independent services.

Also if they don't give an all inclusive price they could end up adding lots of extra charges. I would not pay any more than your quote, that is the price you pay and VAT is their problem. Customers don't pay VAT, sellers do.

*Oh that didn't include the labour cost*
