Just walked away

The clio 172 I test drove on 10 July is still up for sale at the same price as when I tested it. It had been up for months at that point too.

I'm sure they still think they can get asking for it... by 2020

A dealer friend of mine said to me that if a car stays on his forecourt for 18 months, he's bought it.

This one was a heap of ****. Broke down less than 10 mins into my test drive ,mouldy seats.. Need I go on? I'd love to know the circumstances of it landing on their forecourt because I can't imagine anyone would buy it willingly for more than 50p with the intention of making a profit on it.

5k will get you into something with more spec than that Golf anyway, might not have the VW badge but you'll get more for your money.

I don't understand why anyone would see the VW badge as anything special compared to it's peers like a Ford / Vauxhall / Mazda / Nissan / Honda..

I think VW are generally higher thought of than the brands you just suggested. Being German helps and they don't tend to depreciate as fast the others you suggested?

Probably going to get flamed for this, but mazda and honda are the only 2 on that list i'd mark as saying as having the same general "premium ness" as most vw's.

A lot of folk dont like vw for being too common and generic, but my view is there's a good reason a car gets to be generic, its probably because its good.

Our search criteria is ultimately 1.6L - 2.0L auto estate cars up to £6k (may need separate thread). My wife will be driving it mostly, carting two kids in the back and a boot load of child related paraphernalia.

There's a dealer near me that won't let you test drive a car until you've negotiated and agreed the price. Apparently my claims that seeing how the car drove might affect my offer fell on deaf ears. I left and have no plans to ever look at their stock again.

I went to look at an old A3 once at a big used car place in Coventry. The guy said they only do test drives after the deposit is paid, yeah bye.
