New £5 note angers vegans and vegetarians

Let's do the maths .... Well. Let someone else do them for us.

Tallow is rendered cow or mutton fat, but for the sake of argument let's go with cows here.

How much do cows weigh? Between 1,100kg for a male (bull) and 720kg for a female. So, on average, a cow weighs 910kg.

The body fat content of an average cow is 25 percent. Therefore, the amount of fat in an average cow's body is 227.5kg.

How many kilograms of this fat is contained in offcuts you could use to make tallow? About 40kg, according to a man at the James Elliott butcher in Islington.

How much tallow is used in one note, according to the Bank of England? "A trace", which chemically means less than 100 parts per million, or 0.01 percent. A polymer consultant I called confirmed that the tallow present in a given polymer would be a fraction of a single percentage.

New £5 notes weigh 0.7g, therefore there is roughly 0.00007 g of tallow present in one £5 note.

How many fivers are in circulation now, and therefore will be around by May of 2017, when all the old paper ones have been phased out? 329 million notes.

To work out how much tallow will be used in total in all of these fivers, we need to multiply 0.00007g by 329 million, which gives us 23,030g, or 23kg.

And if you get about 40kg of tallow-worthy fat from the average cow, how many cows would you need to make every single £5 note in circulation?

JUST OVER HALF OF ONE COW

Just to emphasize how pathetic our society has become ... Some other petitions which have much less traction than this:

– Shutting down the UK's domestic ivory trade has 71,416 signatures.
– Increasing the maximum sentence for animal cruelty charges has 51,473 signatures.
– Ending the badger cull has 63,461 signatures.

That's the third time that's been copied and pasted in this thread - Do you not read?

DO YOU NOT READ????????

Half a cow, one million cows, makes no difference.
I'm a vegan did I tell you
I'M A VEGAN DON'T YOU KNOW.

I'll make it bigger and put it in Comic Sans

Back in my day in 1976 if you had vilified people in the pub for their lifestyle choices we would have all walked out.

I would posit to you:
Would you eat a chimpanzee, even if they were not endangered?
Perhaps you would, but many meat eaters would draw the line somewhere up the animal chain.
People draw their lines are drawn at different points.
Pescetarians may take the view that of all meat seafood meat is the least harmful from an ethical point of view.

I would eat "You" if the situation required it. ;) :p

Makes no sense to me for people in survival situations to wait until they are at deaths door (And by which time the meat is now no longer fit to eat) before eating the dead.

To my mind, if there was no realistic possibility of immediate rescue, the dead people should be eaten first before they have gone off, and while the survivors are still reasonably healthy and capable of doing the other things that they need to do in order to survive.

Waiting until everybody is dying and the only food left has gone off makes no sense at all!

I'm glad I can say I'm a vegan now without any comeback.
It was terrible in the 60s, people didn't understand you didn't like the sausage.

It's disgusting that you would probably put up with it.
Go back to your cave.

Are you actually vegan SexyGreyFox?

If so can I ask why? (In a genuine curiosity way, not in a dickish way)

I can understand vegetarianism, I just can't understand veganism...

Are you actually vegan SexyGreyFox?

No but the young man is quoting from another thread and is showing his homophobia.
I said I would walk out of a pub if I heard people being homophobic and obviously he'd put up with it because of the post he's just made.
However it's his right.

I've figured out a way to remove all meat based produce from the new £5 so if you wish to have this removed please let me know and I'll give you an address to post it too for fixing.

Please note this also works on bank transfers as I will remove the money from a cash point and fix that note too.

(Return not included in service)

And so it begins.....

Sorry but as a meat eater, I want animal products in my £5 note.

People are outraged by the tallow in the £5 because they can get attention and are being told to be. If this had happened a few years ago we would have heard nothing of it.

I wonder if they are aware that animal products such as Gelatin, Tallow etc are used in common everyday type cosmetics such as eye shadow, lipstick etc.
