Ebay - wrong delivery address

I rarely use Ebay myself and this is part of my problem.

My wife recently used my ebay to buy something, after paypal paying I realised that I had not updated my address, I emailed the seller immediately, informed them of the change of address and asked if they were happy to dispatch it to my new address - they said this was fine.

A week or so later and it appears that the item has had an attempted delivery to my old address and is now sat at the local sorting office.

I can't collect it because the red card is in the old address, redelivery is pointless, would also go to the same address.

I'm annoyed with the seller, if they didn't want to use the new address they should have said.

What should I do next?

do you have the red card ? address is irrelevant if you have the card just take it to the sorting office and collect the parcel ?

I did update the ebay address so by the time of dispatch (but not sale) it was correct. I can see from the sellers point of view it sounds like a scam.

Old house has a letterbox.

Contacted seller - who said 'tracking says they attempted delivery and its at the sorting office' to which I've replied - Yeah - but you sent it to the old address.

Go to the post office, explain the situation, show proof of identity/address. Do you have a utility bill with the old address on it? Really not that hard :)

Post office staff have rules of their own. I went to pick up a signed for item with the card, having ID that showed I lived at the address and even had the same surname... but my forename was different so they were not sure if they could hand it over. What made it worse was the card just had initials on it(also my initials) so how was I to know it wasn't for me to collect it?

I had this before as a seller. Buyer paid, delivery address was wrong. I had to refund them and get them to check out again with the new address - inconvenient sure but it's the only way to ensure both sides are protected as much as possible.

Common sense would say this is the answer - and I'm going to give it a go, I've a full print out of the ebay history to go along with it that supports what has happened.

I Just fear rules and bureaucracy will trump common sense.

You can use the royal mail redelivery option on the website. You don't have to have it delivered to the same address, you can have it delivered to another address for a small fee. Not having the original red card isn't an issue.

We know you can’t always get to your local delivery office to collect it, so we're happy to make a Redelivery to get your item to you safely:
free to your own address
free to another address in your postcode area
or for a small fee - to your local Post Office® branch.

That won't work unless the OPs new address is on the same street as his old one. You could try and ask an old neighbour to accept it for you.

As a seller you should never post an item to any address other than the one on the PayPal payment. Unfortunately updating your address after the fact doesn't change that and the only way around it is cancelling and starting over.

If they are a high volume seller they probably just forgot and ran off all of the orders using their printing service to their label printer in 1 wave which will use which ever address is listed on ebay.

I had a similar problem - I contacted the local post office and they returned it to sender (it had been dropped off in my 'safe place' but they went and collected it back (again, no-one living at my old address) - I then got a refund. I re-purchased the item and got it a couple of days later.

To be fair, my ebay address was correct but it was paypal that I hadn't updated, but its the same thing.

Wrong it is postcode area, so as long as the delivery is attached to the same delivery office it shouldn't be a problem.

All resolved, but only because someone in the post office bent the rules a little, the member of staff went to school with my partner so was happy with identity (plus the other proof). Worked out in the end.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and idea's - sorry to inflict another Ebay thread on GD.
