Worldwide Shortage Of Preparation H?

How is your blood pressure - if it's high it doesn't help piles one bit.

Try germolene - stings a bit but it's nice when it wears off - also if you have heated seats in your car - put on high and go on a long drive.

Did you know that preparation H has shark liver oil as one of it's ingredients ? must be down to a shortage of sharks

Well then at least you know the vegans/veggies won't be using it all :p

Gemolene on your ring-piece are you wise enough?! I once dry shaved with a wet razor and unsurprisingly my face face was a bit 'tingly' - a friend suggested germolene, they too said it would sting a little bit at first - I nearly passed out with the pain. I can only imagine how stingy your hoop would be rubbing germolone on to it would be!!

As I said in the OP, not a medical thread and I did (eventually) source the stuff; it was more to try and get a view as to why the stuff should be in short supply.

However in answer to the points raised, no it's not a regular (ha!) issue, haven't had trouble for years. If I hadn't eventually been able to source a remedy then the GP or at least the receptionist would have been my next port of call - as would be the case if it got worse. I pride myself (as does SWMBO) on not pestering the doctor for every little lump, bump or ailment.

***Not a medical thread - I know the problem and the remedy, this concerns sourcing the latter.***

Can anyone associated to or having connections with the medical or pharmaceutical profession please explain why there appears to be a shortage of medicines to treat haemorrhoids? Without going into grisly detail I had a flare up last week and after it didn't die down on its own decided to buy some suppositories in order to treat it.

Tried several chemists locally, none had any in stock and all commented that they cannot get hold of the product. Online not much better with Amazon out of stock or suppliers charging a premium price - up to £400 for 24 "bullets". Ebay the same. I eventually tracked down some Boots own brand on their site, just hope they're actually effective.

It's been a right pain in the bum (let's get the obvious pun out the way) but in between the mockery which is sure to follow my OP, I would be interested to know why it is so difficult to get a treatment for a very common problem.

IIRC, this happened to a lot of things a couple of years ago. The EU brought in rules to only allow the import of products with ingredients that had been medically tested for safety. This was really to stop a lot of Chinese herbal medicines that were full of active ingredients, many used for a thousand years, but had never been tested in the west for safe limits or side effects.

An unintended consequence was that a lot of western pharmaceutical products (often made abroad in cheaply run factories and then imported) fell foul of the same rules. Ingredients that had been used for a long time, but never run through modern testing regimes suddenly became un-importable, and not cost effective to put through human trials. All sorts of effective products that had been used for years and even prescribed by doctors suddenly become unavailable.

With too low a volume/price to make re-testing and viable, companies looked for alternative ingredients, licensed products out to other companies who thought they could make it cheaper and thus financially viable, or promised to reformulate and bring replacement products to market. Many of those products have simply not re-appeared.

Are you confusing this with Bepanthan. A baby bum cheek soreness cream. Otherwise you're doing it wrong.

Nope, no confusion at all, and nope, not doing it wrong.

Although Bepanthen is a good second choice and the one I had to go with today - Sorry OP, no Prep H left up here either (my tat artist said today that he thinks they have fully ceased manufacturing of it).

Just stop sitting on cold or hard seats.

I got them once! I could have made a few bottles of red wine they were that bad.

Working at 5am in -5c weather in the fruit market sitting on a cold van caused it.

How many people have had a tattoo done and were advised to use preparation H??
Well actually when I got my Very cool tattoo (Celtic triad) on my lower back, the tattoo artist told me to use Vaseline intensive care cream, and when I told people this they were surprised and said that they had been told to use the preparation H. So obviously being me and a nurse I had to look in to it properly!
I looked in to a report by a Dr Jeff Herndon who is a professor at the department of medicinal chemistry. He quite clearly states that preparation H should not be used on tattoos. He states that it contains live yeast cells which when used for haemorrhoids helps with the skin respiratory factor…however goes on to say that this active ingredient does NOTHING to relieve and itching or swelling associated with a new tattoo, and that the best thing is to keep the tattoo clean and moist.
Dr Herndon goes on to explain that preparation H also contains 3% shark liver oil!! This is used to form a physical barrier on the skin which is said to be very helpful in the healing process of piles though Herndon suggests that this has no benefit on tattoo’s in fact possibly impedes the healing of a new tattoo!! Herndon goes on to say that you should refrain for using preparation H on tattoos and that doing so would cause more harm then good. He also says “I just can’t figure why you’d want to spread yeast cells on a tattoo”.

Each to their own though, just never heard of it before.

That comment about the red wine made me LMAO. :D
