I'm thinking about buying a graphics card for my nephew. He's got my old PC with the AMD Phenom II X4 955 and 8gb RAM.
Currently he's got 560Ti, was surprised how well it handles BF1. Guessing it was on low details but it certainly looked good to me when I saw him playing.
Don't wanna spend too much, was thinking 460 or should I get him 1050 Ti? Thanks

Well with that CPU, very good in its day, it will be entirely dependent on the game that is being played as to how much it will bottleneck a new generation GPU.

BF1 is one of the better games when it comes to balancing CPU & GPU load so a 1050Ti would see a huge improvement in performance over the 560Ti, whereas something like the latest Tomb Raider which can bring even the fastest CPU to it's knees, the 1050Ti will be severely bottlenecked by the 955.

As long as you/he keeps that in mind then a 1050Ti would be a good paring for the money.

My son uses a 7950 and it seems a ok match for the cpu ([email protected]) personally I wouldn't pair anything faster with it.

Also with the phenom most games the framerate will be up and down a bit depending on scene and won't lock to 60 like an i5 would but kids don't really notice it.

On a few games it can be hard messing round with the settings trying to figure out which ones will lower cpu useage.

7950 is bottlenecked by a 955. can remember benching bf3 with mine at 3.9 vs a stock i5 3570k.

so wouldnt get anything much better or above a 7950 performance.

I was using a Phenom II with a GTX 780 earlier in the year and the bottlenecking depended heavily on not just the game, but even areas within the game. Dark Souls III was real rough in certain areas for example, yet ran perfectly in many others. Just make sure to use DX12 in any game where it's supported. Whilst people have been disappointed with its performance on high end machines, it helps immensely when using a weak CPU. My minimums went up by something like 30fps in Rise of the Tomb Raider.

I'd also recommend an Nvidia card over an AMD one, purely because AMD's driver has a higher CPU overhead in DX11 titles, and you need every last bit of CPU performance you can get when using something like a Phenom II.

Are you sure it's not the other way around.?

I have been pairing a GTX 660 2GB with a Phenom II X6 1090T @3.6GHz, for the last 3 years, and it's a good combo when looking at potential bottlenecks etc. It actually runs BF1 and BF4 extremely well at high settings in 1080p.

mate on my ts has a 955 and he gets horrid fps drops with a 1060 down to 30 fps.

when someone tells you it runs fine ask what fps they get and what minimums.if they say i dont know what minimums.do more research.:D
