Im from Spain AMA

Why is Bullbaiting / running / fighting still so popular? Or is it even as popular as these 'horror' videos we see online will have you believe? Are there many Spaniards who condemn it? It seems like unnecessary evil to me.

Title.

I live in Spain and have visited the UK a couple of times. I absolutely love UK and I feel much closer to UK than to Spain, but ask me any questions you have.

I am prepared to any hostile comments or questions as sometimes in Spanish forums a british user apperas and is greeted with unpleasant comments xd

I will try to be as unbiased as possible (except for internal Spanish politics).

And btw I am so impressed at how well mainland European's speak English, it really puts us to shame and makes me feel dumb. I suppose it's not exactly 'our' language, anyone is free to learn it.

We are admittedly lazy with regards to languages but you have to ask yourself 1) What are you learning another language for? and 2) which other language? People talk all the time about the secret to learning languages - it's having cause to.

Also familiarity helps keep it fresh (unlike learning in School then not hearing a french word for 20 years). English is the lingua franca in most of the world and people all over Europe are exposed to it on a more or less daily basis through the media, films (American - if subtitled) and music (both American and British).

When I meet someone in Europe who knows their own language and English, plus 2 or 3 other European languages, I'm impressed.

I work for a Spanish company so I have no questions as my office is full of Spaniards. In fact I do have one, why do you guys take so many damn holidays? It's very annoying.

My family is from Spain but I have lived in Canada all my life. My mom came over with the family in the 1960s.

I much prefer Canada to Spain, in terms of culture, people, laws, etc. In Spain you can get locked up for insulting someone, or for stealing a chicken. For years. Ridiculous.

My father stabbed somebody at work over an argument a few months ago here in Canada. He got a full discharge with the condition that he do anger management. That's my kind of legal system.

Spanish workers are among the worst paid in Western Europe and the Spanish government is a hive of scum and villainy.

I'm also not a fan of the Anglo-phication of Spain. Every time I watch one of my fav Spanish TV shows there are more English words replacing Spanish words. It's considered 'chic' to talk like this. (Fashionable to destroy your own language and culture, in other words).

Spain is a nice place to visit and I do so every summer but I definitely wouldn't want to live there.

Why is it whenever I eat squid in Spain it's tender and delicious, but anywhere else it's tough and rubbery? What do you do to those squid? Are they a different species?

Because in Spain, Calamari (Calamar) is usually not calamar at all, it's pota. Pota is a similar squid type animal that has much more tender meat. It is cheaper to buy as well. It's considered trashy to eat it so every restaurant will deny serving it to you, but unless you are at a four star restaurant, you are eating pota.

The concept of animal rights is very new in Spain. It didn't come into being until the 2000s. More and more people dislike bullfights every year but a great many Spanish believe it is a part of their culture to assault and kill animals for entertainment.

While that's all true, I'm still impressed by people who are fluent in more than one language. That's probably because I found it very difficult to learn other languages. I have some French and some Latin, but I never learned them well enough to speak them fluently. I used to be able to read and write both, but speaking a language is much harder (to me, anyway).

I used to vaguely know someone who spoke Spanish and English with different regional accents. That's serious fluency. I've no idea if he was Spanish or English, but both languages were his native language.

Apparently the head translator for the EU is fluent in 27 languages. 27!
