Over the years I've really come to despise Christmas. I guess the hate really appeared when I realised. That the whole period is nothing but a money grabbing campaign.

I think the only thing I enjoy is the time off. Am I alone in feeling this way about Christmas?

Our economy is built on Capitalism and encouraging spending. Nobody is making you get involved.

Being generous at Christmas and associating it with family time is a nice thing to promote though IMO.

Food, booze, family, friends, time off work, laughs, games, presents, seeing your kids in wonder...I realise this is counter to the intended direction of the thread, but Christmas is all right with me!

Just to confirm. I have no issue with the family side of it all. It's what it should all be about. Instead it's about having adverts thrown in my face.

agreed - what's not to like about it. you decide yourself how 'commercial' you make it.

Can you not ban Christmas instead?

I think you'll find it's easier to just ban you :p

You can do that all year round though. Why does it need a specific date for people to do things like that?

I'm not religious and don't have kids so I can take or leave Christmas. I'll go to the Manchester Christmas Markets to take in the atmosphere but that's about it.

I'd no doubt feel totally different if I had kids.

No you are not alone :)

I go into hedgehog mode.

TBH i use to feel the same until this year and made a different realisation. Though i harbour some negativity toward the holiday, this is how i see it:

Holidays are what YOU make them to be. Just because everyone else treats a wish list like a guilt free way to buy themselves what they want or shops use it to make up for the 70% of the year they lose more money than gain, it does not mean you have to.

Let people spend their money and shout their advertisements. You can choose to treat it like normal every day occasion with the bonus of being able to take advantage of the odd abnormality:

-Good food
-See friends and family you dont normally see
-Grab some personal treats at the marginally discounted christmas prices (very marginally :p)
-Drink loads without seeming like an alcoholic

There really is no need to get stressed or feel bitter toward companies/family/friends that go full commercial, since you really dont have to participate to any degree you dont wish to.

Ads are in our face all year round. It's not like the ads get longer. They just all change to a red and white colour scheme :p

It's everywhere because it is a promotional tool. It's fine if you hate marketing. Because they will take advantage of LITERALLY every avenue they can. But Xmas marketing IMO is just the same as normal marketing just in a singular direction.

It just feels way more intense.

The Coca Cola adverts are the worse. They really grind my gears.... Just thinking about it now is stressing me out.

Food is main thing for me and watching kids opening presents, chit chat. There is a purpose to Christmas, to remember/celebrate the birth of Jesus but most people don't bother with that.

When we were younger it was good times, big excuse for people to get drunk and hook up, not that I was particulary lucky there.

Ceeeelebrate good times, come on...

I love Christmas, but travelling anywhere in this country is a ball-ache at the best of times, and Christmas ain't the best of times for travelling.
