GTX 1060 vs. RX 480 - A World Flipped on it head!

WHAT! Gameworks titles no longer an advantage on Nvidia, What has the gfx card world come to.

Welcome to the world where all games that are ported to consoles also, are optimised to run nicely with AMD hardware......

Also is not new. Look the ancient 290X. Almost 4y old card. And compare it to 780Ti and Titan Black, which were it's faster (on release month) contemporaries.

It beats the crap out of them both, with a good margin these days, while the 290X can run perfectly fine DX12 and Vulcan on top!!!!!

I think you may find that from 2013 till 2015 the 780ti was the faster card ( not just on release month ) and from 2015 till 2016 the 780ti and 290x were pretty even in none dx12 games, the 290x now is the faster card and may have been for 8 months or so but the 780ti had a good 2 years odd above the 290x when it mattered.

The titan is another story, such a lot of money at the time for a card people thought would last years and years.

It was obvious for those that had eyes to see. Ever since Kepler, you could count on Nvidia's cards keeping their competitive advantage for about 6 (to 12 at best) months. Unfortunately, we know all too well how rational purchasing decisions generally are (i.e. not much at all).

At the risk of sounding like I'm justifying my purchase of a 1060. (I don't feel I am as I also have a 1080 so don't care too much about the low end card battle and I'd buy a 480 tomorrow if I thought it offered anything over and above a 1060.

So the 480's caught up? Great news but it makes a lot of fuss in doing so, drawing more power, more heat, more noise. My 1060 is absolutely silent even under full load in a htpc case and there's a lot to be said for that too.

You just did.

It seems you can even get a custom RX480 8GB with only a six pin PCI-E power connector:

http://powercolor.com/Global/products_features.asp?id=619

IIRC,Computerbase.de tested it and it had no issue maintaining clockspeed at around 1.25GHZ to 1.28GHZ,it consumes the same amount of power as the reference model and is significantly quieter.

Edit!!

There is also noise of a Polaris 10 XT2 being discovered in the OS X drivers:

https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...d-radeon-drivers.197273/page-118#post-1386344

That indicates a new revision of the core is probably being released.

So, at DX11 and 1080p the cards are now basically the same. Is there any evidence of the 480 now overtaking the 1060 in future driver updates? Does AMD do this? The 1060 has been caught up, but will it be surpassed is what I am wondering basically. I am specifically talking about DX11/1080p because that's what most people are using, before anyone starts quoting the DX12/Vulcan figures (would be interesting to see what the difference is without Vulcan, as that is a huge gain for AMD).

Yes it will be probably surpassed. AMD are slower to get off the ground with drivers after a new card comes out but usually get more out of the hardware given time. That is without dx12/vulkan.
7970,290,Fury are all good examples.

The 480 Ref cooler is quite loud but nothing too annoying. The ref Titan X (Maxwell) blower was quite loud also but again, not overly annoying. I personally don't want another ref blower though unless I intend on going back with water cooling.

Watercooling these days is so easy if you use coloured tubing and plenty of quick disconnects.

It is just as quick swapping components in and out as it is on air.:)

With quick disconnects you can even prefill the components before you install them.:D

if AMD can work there magic with crossfire, I wouldn't consider team green ever again.

I wouldn't put my eggs in the "Hopefully Crossfire will get Better" as it never does for long, It's too much of a long term effort.

Vega's the way to go.

My Fury pro hasn't quite got the grunt to run everything comfortably at 3440x1440, Vega should have no problem.
