So I absolutely brimmed it this afternoon (diesel sat in the neck when I screwed the fuel filler cap back on) and then drove home via a roundabout and the motorway, amongst other things.
After I parked up, I noticed that the edge of the rear door was completely covered in diesel

In previous cars, over-flow from the fuel filler region drained underneath the car, but I'm confused as to how diesel managed to spray itself on the door and next to the fuel filler cap
You can see it clearly in the second picture - that's not dirt brushed away on the rear quarter panel - it's diesel!

So, OCUK - why is there diesel on my door??

Maybe you spilt a bit on your door from the nozzle after you had finished filling up?
Nope
Clearly the best way to stop this is not to fill it so it's overflowing.......

Because you overfilled it?
It drained its way down the neck before I drove off, and I closed the cap, so how did it overflow? Where did come out of??

This, more importantly it's ****ing lethal to those of us on bikes.
Alright, relax. It's not like I drove around dumping diesel all over the road. If it was on the road, it wouldn't be on my door!

I'm more curious as to how you even managed this.

How is this even possible? Hold the trigger till it clicks and then you're done and it's not overflowing?

You can feather the trigger and fill the expansion area in the tank and the filler neck, if you are really determined... :p

Occam's razor...

The simplest explanation is the most likely. The simplest explanation is you spilled some without noticing.

I'm not sure I fully understand why you feel you must brim the tank anyway, I mean I fill my tank and don't have to return for just shy of 500 miles, the last few dribbles really aren't going to matter and yet run the risk of this...

I could get an extra 10 litres in the Polo if I feathered the trigger until it was almost overflowing. :p

Haven't tried it since because I found out it was a bad idea.

I'm forever trying to explain to drivers at work not to overfill the truck tanks, especially Scania trucks as they recirculate unused (hot) fuel back into the tanks which expands and is then dumped into the road, especially by our depot near Junction 15 of the M6, as you exit the depot you have to take a sharp turn which exacerbates the issue and makes the junction (by Hanchurch Crossroads for any locals) treacherous, especially for bikers.

Having seen a few bikers come off outside our depot I can assure it's quite a drama for them!

Alas, many of our drivers are convinced that brimming the tanks is the only way to fill them even though you can easily do Stoke-London and back on half a tank!
