LVC is very highly rated for laser eye surgery and a number of members here (including myself) had it done there. They do cataracts as well, although not sure how they compare for that. You could always give them a call; https://www.londonvisionclinic.com/cataract-surgery/
2 years ago, it cost me, or rather my Insurers, £1,700. This included 2 consultations - pre and post op - and the operation itself. That was one eye and no complications.
It is actually a well organised and nicely operated production line. As somebody with an engineering back ground. I like that!
As you can see from the website, Nuffield charge around £2700/Eye.
My procedure was a bit more complex (# See below) so cost a bit more (£3500/eye IIRC) but I had additional procedures and an overnight stay for each eye.
Though this seems like a lot, when I looked around the pre-op room, the theatre, and the post op facilities and saw the scale of the (industrial) operation, the amount of specialised facilities and equipment, and the numbers of highly skilled, trained and educated people involved. I think it is astonishingly good value.
The bottom line is that this is what medical care costs, I am staggererd that it does not cost more all things considered.
I have just carried out an extended service on an old Skoda Octavia and, with some extra issues, (EG New EGR valve, electronic throttle body, glow plugs and alternator) the whole lot has come to nearly a Grand. When i see what is actually involved, Having a cataract done for only two and a half actually seems rather cheap!
Although cataract surgery is normally done as day surgery. I would strongly recommend an overnight stay if you can run to it, or failing that, an overnight stay in a suitable hotel within a short distance (walking distance ideally) of the hospital.
# My procedure was more to do with Glaucoma than cataracts. so I had what is called Phako + i-stent . This is a relatively recent treatment which I believe is still regarded by the NHS as essentially experimental (and as of 18 months ago, would only be considered once all else has failed, though the situation may be diferent today)
As a consequence, I had it done perhaps a bit sooner than might otherwise have been considererd.
It has been an incredible success. My IOP is now around 14mb/eye. prior to surgery I was heading north of 30 even with eye-drops.
Sadly I think I have actually suffered retinal damage that might not have occurred had I had the surgery sooner.
My advise for Glaucoma sufferers is that once you know you have a problem, there is no such thing as "Too Soon"
And even if you dont have insurance, think of this...!
Eyesight Vs second hand Vauxhall Corsa!
If ever there was one of those "No Brainer" situations!
Thank you for the replies - There is a specialist at Shrewsbury Hospital and another at Crew - both highly rated and cost are in 2.5k region.
I am a member of Benidon Health care and we are hoping they can assist once she gets the referrals from her Doc and her name is on NHS list - it is a worry at moment as both her eyes have cateracts and optician said they are growing fast - but having one done will help tremendously.
Just shows that this "NHS postcode lottery" is a real thing. In Leeds I've had 2 cataract-style lens replacements, 4 trabs, an i-stent, 3 bleb needlings, and an op for aqueous misdirection - all on the NHS, and never waited more than 6 weeks. On 17th Jan I'm going in for an "Ahmed valve" implant (all for Glaucoma treatment).
Leeds NHS Teaching trust's care for eye patients is astonishingly good.
